there's no way i'm having a water meter .... after all, i grow LOADS of fruit and veg .... i normally have a sprinkler on in the summer ....

Water meters are fairer, the more you use the more it costs, and since most of the cost is in making it drinkable (but very little of it actually gets used that way) seems reasonable to me, WHEN THEY FIX THE SYSTEM LEAKS!

Hmmm we had a drought for over 10yrs here. 8 of them when we moved to the country so I'm not just cautious about water I'm feral about it. This last year tho we've had loads of rain, floods, I almost gave in and bought an umbrella last week! There's some funny green stuff out there in the paddocks - altho the weeds inspector wants me to kill it all - seems a shame when there was nothing but brown before ;(.
When we first moved down here and were visiting back in Sydney a friend was telling us how the council had employed a lot of people to be Water Police! Checking if people were using sprinklers etc. I told her they could save water by asking just one question 'Black, brown, or stripey?' Since we pump out of the river for all but our drinking needs I'm obsessed with not using water so we don't have to brave the snakes at the river. It's the best deterent to water usage I've ever seen!

We have also had rain every day since the ban came in. But it's not really heavy enough to make a difference, it just sort of drizzles and then evaporates.
My parents live by a river - the water levels have not changed by their house in 15 years - not convinced at all there is a shortage.Comment

Most reservoirs are low, we had a very dry winter. It would be a lot less of a problem if the water-companies got their act together and fixed the leaks in the system, but also the waste of drinking quality water for... well all sorts of things, but power-showers (forget about a shower using a lot less water than a bath.. not if you use one of those!) every day, often including hair washing (I grew up with a bath a week, hair washed alternate weeks, for the rest just washing the accessible bits, doesn't seem to have harmed me!)
That's without washing cars, and so much of the other stuff we COULD do without!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.Comment

It makes no difference what the year is, or what sort of country you're living in - if there's a water shortage through lack of rain, then there's a water shortage. I can't see what being 'a hippy' has got to do with it? One can be acceptably and hygienically clean with the use of a bowl/sink of water, some soap and a flannel, there really isn't a need to use gallons of water from a shower or in a bath! And using tap-water to wash the car is just pure selfishness IMO.Comment

Whilst I agree we should try to save water in the present climate, there are some questions to be asked.
Some water companies are still losing up to 50% of their water through leaky pipes. I know they face massive costs to do the repairs but would a car manufacturer be allowed to send a car out with a leaky oil sump. Maybe time to cut the share holders divi's until the problem has been cleared up.
And I still can't get my head around that I am still expected to pay full water rates for a service which is not being supplied.
Maybe they get away with it because they are suppyling a natural resource in a commercial enviroment, which allows them to play people off against one and other.

I cannot understand why the water companies do not offer to convert every toilet cistern to dual or variable flush. If they can offer grants for boilers and cars why not for toilets?Comment

VC what a good idea, but you can't just do the cistern it as to be the whole suite for a reason thats rather delicate. However it would use over 2 ltrs less per flush and that adds up to an awlful lot of water saved.
