  • Grand National Aintree today

I know this is going to be controversial, but I wondered what the Grapes thought about the Grand National at Aintree this afternoon.

I know that some people are quite happy about it and are happy to place a bet once a year but I also know there are others who think that it is a very hard and difficult race and shouldn't be held because horses sometimes get injured and, unfortunately, have to be put to sleep.

I'm one of those people who has a flutter once a year on this race. I believe that these horses are trained to race and jump fences and that some of these animals are trained specifically for the Grand National.

    What do other Grapes think?

I worked in a betting office for 10 years and I can honestly say I dont miss it. I used to like the atmosphere of G national day ( the build up) but the attitude of the hardened gamblers was awful, If horses fell I would be almost in tears but the customers would be screaming "just shoot the bloody thing, its in the way." I hated it. Ive never placed a bet on the race since I left about 6 years ago.

I had 50p each way on McKelvey. I had another 4 quid on others that didn't make it! I don't have much luck in the national - flat racing brings more luck - had £1 each way on a 50-1 shot in the Oaks a while back - and it won, leading from start to finish.

I don't bet not because I don't believe in it - I just hate not getting anything for my money. I'm the only person I know who's never bought a lottery ticket! For the first couple of years I put £1 in a tin each week and we went out for a meal at the end of the year. Couldn't be bothered to keep it up though.
