  • Do our water butts contribute to the water shortage

I'm in a drought area and there was much discussion on local radio on the effects etc. Do you know that the water that falls belongs to our water companies and therefore my water butts are full of rainwater that could have entered the water table and actually belongs to anglian water. If i (and you) didn't have butts would that extra water entering the system mean that our reservoirs would be full.
    What are your views ?
How do YOU preserve water, I heard we may be issued with waterproof egg timers to time our showers to 4 minutes !!!!

I use an age old process and dehydrate my water to be used later. Cheers, Tony.

We don't live in the States yet! Rainfall is a natural resource and doesn't belong to water authorities until it reaches land/rivers/reservoirs/drains that they own and maintain. If it falls on my roof, it's mine, otherwise the waterboard can foot the bill for the damage caused by "their" rain that came in under MY tiles last month!

That sounds like BS to me.

Water companies have got a bit of cheek anyway, the amount they charge for water that we just borrow (via the tap) and then return to them (via the drain)

what comes from the sky, down the roof areas into the barrels on my lottie,i count as mine, after all it takes time to set up,not counting scrounging and cleaning said barrels, another thing,if i were to rely on the tap,it would be a pain in the rear and not so good for the plants,we not allowed to run a hose pipe to water the ground only to fill barrels,we have a pump, runs of a battery so it's much better for me,as i do the watering, takes a bit longer than a tap,but is a good all rounder, last year there was enough saved water

They'll be charging you water rates on the water butts before long...........................

Different water authorities will be claiming various rain clouds...............

Keep looking up..............you may even see a flying pig!

On a lot of old houses the rainwater downpipes empty directly into the sewers, mine does, so I'm just saving it from being treated unnecessarily

Surely water belongs to the Gods (small 'g' or large 'G' as you wish) - the old basic elements of life - Air, Earth, Fire and Water ?
