Son no2 has been searching for work for a year now, and has never even had the offer of an interview. He's 21, educated to A level standard, polite, clean, but no work experience since doing a paper round while still at school. Uni did not work out, and he found it very hard to come to terms with how his life seemed to have come such a dead end.
He sent off an application for 2 jobs yesterday and received a reply to both, asking him to go in for interview this afternoon. (I had to help him dye his roots, and beard, this morning, but blue/black, so professional look
) It turned out it was actually the same company, interviewing for 2 different jobs. He arrived a bit early, so they called him in, and both interviewed him at the same time, because no one else had turned up for the afternoon appointments at that time.
He felt it had gone well, and said he would know he hadn't been lucky if he hadn't heard by 7.30. 6.50, he's got the job
. Even better once he knows the ropes they want him to train as a manager of the new office that will be set up next year. Of course the salary will also come in useful to him, between £18000 and £19000 , and he starts on Monday next. I don't think I've known the process move so fast, and it is for a well known reputable company.
There were 25 applicants screened out of the initial applicants for interview, OH dropped son no2 off, and was amazed at how the other applicants that passed him by in the car had made no attempt to dress smartly, despite the dress code being set out unambiguously as smart/business in the invitation email. Also, Son no2 made a point of having researched the company and could talk intelligently about their aims and values etc. One of the interviewers complimented him, saying he know more about the company than any of the interviewees that they had seen in the morning session.
I suppose one of the major problems is that people on Jobseekers have to apply or contact a minimum number of employers, whether or not they actually want, or are qualified for the job.
