I think you all have a bucket fetish. No offense...

I've grown my toms in growbags for years, this year I won't be. I looked at the stems of my MIL's last year and realised mine are in need of more substance. This year they are getting a deep bed with plenty of well rotted chicken doings.

I'm a mere novice in the bucket stakes I think I only have about 7, and most of those are for home brew.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Mikey, try cutting growbags in half, turning them cut-side up, and growing one tomato plant per section.
Not an original idea, but probably takes up less space than buckets (because they will squidge to fit the space).
2 plants per bag instead of 3, but if they do much better....
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

As I've got the space HB, they are going in a raised bed within my greenhouse, its 2 ft wide, and 10 inches deep of compost on top of upturned turf. Normally my toms main stem get to the thickness of my index finger, whereas my MIL's gets to the thickness of a broom handle. I'll try it this year and see how the plants differ, gardening for me is a continual enjoyable experiment.

Just thought I'd post this for anyone interested.

I popped in to my local Morrisons this morning and bought some buckets 8 for 99p. They were stacked by the flowers but didn't have the price and bar code on them so I asked one of the chaps on the produce section and he labelled them up for me. They have a little section like a cupboard with no door where they do all the reductions and stuff. There were loads of buckets stacked up in there and he was saying how they aren't allowed to give them away or take them home even if they go unsold...they just get dumped.

So I was thinking if you go in for some and can't see any it may pay to ask...I don't think they even get recycled so we'd be doing the planet a favour.

I got some solid black buckets from the local florist supplier. Well chuffed. He said he'll catch me in the mornings when he got more spares

Well, I've been into my local Morrissons and asked if I could buy them and was told "no, they don't sell them they dump them"

It looks like I will have to buy some builders buckets instead

I'd go back and ask someone else with a bit more sense *shakes head in disbelief*

May be worth contacting Morrisons Head Office to clarify.

I get mine from Lidl now. Cheery manager and his minnions let me have them for free.

Question: How big are the drainage holes that you put in? Different size holes for different uses? Bottom or sides or both? What do you make the holes with? (I find a normal drill bit 'travels' as I start the hole.

I have a set where I have take the large 'centre circle' out of the bottom with a Stanley knife. These are used for toms which are placed on soil.

Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

I borrowed the OH's drill and used one of his stepped drill bits (it's like 10 drill bits in one, starts out as a small diameter and gradually steps out to larger diameters), very handy and doesn't seem to crack the base.

15mm copper pipe heated to cherry red 4 holes per bucket. No cracking and a rim of plastic left round the hole for extra strength.

Now I am sure that my son can post me some pipe, but are we talking blow torch? gas hob? barbeque?
