Filling loo rolls.

How do you fill yours?

I find it such a fiddle and end up getting as much compost in the tray as I do the rolls. Is there an easy way that I'm missing?

Although I don't bother with loo rolls now (use either root trainers or 3" pots), I used to put a used tea bag in the bottom (to stop the compost falling out) then put the jam funnel in the top and fill that up.

I flatten my loo rolls into a square shape and stand them on a tray so there's no gaps then I fill them using my special garden desert spoon.

Good idea, Hazel,re the teabag. Although I don't drink tea, so never have any but the ones in my jar must be at least a year old and I have a fresh pack, maybe I'll be extravagent and use those up. I don't have a funnel so will use you spoon method Bren. I have flattened them into supposed squares, they just don't seem to want to stay square.

Also, do most people use them whole or cut in half?

I made a funnel from a polystyrene cup by taking the bottom out and it was the right size for grow tubes so loo rolls would probably fit too.

I leave mine whole then make paper pots if i need anything smaller.

Never have been able to make the things, the tea bag drops out the soil goes every where, they go soggy fold and collapse.

Hold a loo roll on your left hand (assuming you're right handed) fill loosely with compost, press down onto your hand with two fingers of your right hand (this compresses the compost at the bottom of the roll so it doesn't fall out) then fill with more compost.

I guess I must be the odd one out as I just push my loo rolls into the bag of compost and lift it out with a plug of compost inside.........if that makes sense.........

I fold mine square, pack them (empty) in a plastic mushroom box (holds 9, I only buy these if I need the pots ), or OH has been buying finish dishwasher tablets on special, these hold 4 nicely. Then I use the spoon technique, without moving the rolls, I don't worry about putting anything in the bottom. There is usually enough space to water using my thin spout watering can.

That's fab Zazen I've obviously not thought much about how I store mine (three massive bags full!)

Now I'd never have thought of doing that, the sectioning, not storing. I paid attention last year when someone mentioned folding them and packing.
