Oh and before anyone asks it was a barbless hook so it comes out easy.

What fly do you recommend to catch the calves with then, or would you use a lure, barbless of course!

Quite partial to a bit of beef with my fish!

The best brown trout for eating is the Lock Leven I seem to remember. Lovely pink flesh like a salmon.
My Uncle was a Resevoir bailiff so I had free fishing when I was a youngun. The only fish I was allowed to bring home for my Grannies supper was a Lock Leven Brownie!
Used to fish with a three fly team (still do!) and once got two fish on at the same time, now that was a fight to remember, God help me if I got three on together......... ahh but to dream!

              I don't like fishing...well, I wouldn't want a hook thru my lip

but, I did go crabbing on the w/e...how much fun is THAT? The crabs seemed to enjoy it too...got a meal of bacon, plus some earlobes and nostrils (cos when the boys got bored of crabbing, they dared each other to attach the crabs to parts of their body)

I once asked a keen fisherman who was also the local vicar how he could justify his fishing for a wild animal. He reckoned fish couldn't feel pain and that to a fish it would be similar to us biting into a cheese sarnie and it pulling us along the street! Don't know whether I agree with his theory or not, but man is a predator and an omnivore and I must admit to getting an adrenalin kick when I catch a fish, even if I fish with a barbless hook and return it to the water unharmed!
A similar feeling to digging a shaw of potatoes and not knowing what you're going to find!

I take your point Two Sheds and untill the fish can speak and tell us we wont really know. The way I look at it is if someone stuck a hook in me the last thing I would do would be to pull against it.Like it or not I'd go were it took me. I cant say what the fish thinks as research supports both points of view some say they feel pain some say they dont . I treat the fish as well as I can and all the fish I release I watch for a few minutes and as I said above they sulk behind a stone for a few minutes and then start to feed again .They are obviously back into their routine and dont seem to be any the worse for what has happened to them.I use a good line play the fish hard and fast and get it unhooked and on its way as quick as possible.

If you look into a trouts mouth, you'll see it's very very hard. Not like a human mouth. Many predatory fish will eat smaller fish covered in spines. I don't think you can compare this with the idea of a hook in a human mouth.

Simply don't understand why people fish if they're not going to eat what they catch, definitley not one for me at all. Until the fish start talking and tell me that they are quite happy to be caught and handled then it's something I will give a wide berth. Am not trying to critise any of you above who enjoy this activity (it's not a sport to me) so long as you've thought it through and still have a clear consience. The people I worry about far more are those who do things without thinking of the consequences and fortunately they appear to be in the minority on this site.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Last thing I caught when I went fishing was a Tesco's trolley.

What a wonderful way to spend a day beefy! If I lived closer Id get my tackle out and join you - theres nowt like catching a bit of trout for your tea! The last time I did this was at Pickering in North Yorkshire - I was the lone female fishing and caught more fish than everyone else put together! I was really chuffed as it was the first time Id been fishing on my own without OH to take the hooks out! Everyone who came past said how well I had done and the guy when I went to pay for the fish couldnt believe it!
