  • Planting tree hedging in school....Help Pls!!

    Hello all

This should be in the school garden thread but I thought more people amy help here? Feel free to move to best place though!

OUr primary school garden group has just received from ASDA?BTCV a tree hedging pack with 15 native saplings in including 3 of Field Malpe, wayfaring tree, Beech, Hazel and Wild Cherry. The info that has come with the pack gives general info on how to dig a hole etc but not in realtion of how you plant them as a hedge!

Does anyone have any experience of planting tree hedging? I need some tips ie how far apart, how to keep height in check..generally things to consider really.

The area we were thinking of is where a wooden fence currently sits to keep the children out of woodland, however Im now worried that it may be compacted with roots and unplantable.

I only got them yesterday and had no notice that we were one of 200 schools selected so no time to plan! The saplings are currently in a bucket of water on my front step. We have discussed temporaily planting them in large planters/dustins until a more permanaent home can be found!

All advice needed and welcomed!! Im a parent volunteer who organises the garden groups at school, but this is out of my experience really! Want to put them to good use though!

    Thankyou in advance
    xx

Dig the hole square NOT round. Provide each plant with a sturdy support, drive this into the hole before planting. Dig holes about two foot apart and prune back any long straggly or damaged branches and roots.

Hope it turns out well. Note. Any damson, edlerberry or crab apples for our feathered chums in the winters? Cheers, Tony.

NO the only fruit is really the cherry Tony, so Im sure they will feats on that. Thaks for planting distances, thats really what I needed. Do we just keep trimming them down to maintain the height then? As you can tell Im a hedge novice!

We got the same pack, and we have nowhere to put a hedge, so we've put them in individual pots, sunk in the ground. A kind of pretend hedge

We may have to do the same TS! What size pots do you use? We were thinking pretty large? Or do you upsize as they grow?

Morrisons buckets mostly Donna: 3 or 4 saplings to a pot (they will be thinned out as they are potted on). We may keep them, or sell them at the summer fair

If our school got offered that pack, they'd probably send it back saying the kids might eat the leaves etc...

Aha _ I have morrisons buckets...well free ASda buckets anyways! Too many really, about 100 or so so they could do with a thinning! We have loads at school so will be an easy job!

Was hoping to plant in ground as part of C0-0p Green school revolution week! Will have to take a spade and have a furtle around the grounds to find some loose soil!!

Thea we have been very lucky so far re HS panics at the school re gardening, really relaxed so far! Famous last words!!
