It goes without saying really that yes, of course I talk to my vegetables, but they are "my sweeties", "my dears", "my beauties" or "my dahlings". All titles are prefixed with "Come along now" and you will never hear me using that particular tone of voice at Himself who needs no encouragement

Sorry, but I talk to my plants in a non-gender specific way, much as the Pogles (anyone remember them?), with their lovely west country accents, talked to their magic bean plant:

              "Morning, plaaants"!

If you remember the Pogles, here's a bit of nostalgia

I don't really talk to my seedlings. I did say sorry to a worm that I accidentally chopping in half digging this morning though

Well, little softie, but yep I did feel guilty about it. Then wondered how many other things I kill when digging/walking.

Turned a plank of wood over to be greeted by tens of baby slugs. I did the natural thing and stamped on them. Hard. Then got back to digging.

Same here. They are my babies but as soon as they have left the nursery they become individuals in their own right.

me to the long line of garlic on the 'lotment-"C'mon, boys, get growing." Caught myself, just after clapping them along, and burst out laughing.

We did have Gladys the BNS last year, Bruno the Ghost rider, and of course Kevin the Moody Aubergine.

I too would be hard pressed to find compassion in my heart for a slug, baby or otherwise. In fact there is infinite pleasure to be found in cutting the big ones in half

I forgot about Claude the courgette! And apparently this year, one of the Aubergines-should it come off- is to be christened Nietzche. I'll be intrigued if anyone who got Bruno babies names 'em
