Good old 'Blighty' (the channel) and The Victorian Kitchen Garden

Just finished watching the reruns of the Victorian Kitchen Garden. I saw it once when i was a kid but never really appreciated it. It was really interesting to see how they struggled finding seed of old veg types which are so widely available now - cardoon etc. But as somebody who has always dreamt of owning a walled garden I was shocked at the costs meantioned during the December episode. To recreate a typical wall garden when the program originaly aired in the 80's (I think it was the 87 ish) would have cost �500,000. It would then cost around �100,000 to run per year if properly manned as per the victorian period! eek

What must that factor up to now? I bet it wouldn't allow for the fuel costs we now have either.

Still, for those who haven't seen them, they are well worth a watch!

Recorded the whole series on Sky + when they dedicated a whole day to it. We've been watching a couple of episodes each weekend. I wonder if they they will repeat the Victorian Kitchen and flower garden series as well. Only vaguely remember them from when they first aired in my childhood!

What about getting them to re-run Jack Hargreaves - Out of Town,compulsory viewing when I was growing up,just wish I could remember more of his wisdom.

Hmm, was just asking the OH the other day if we had this on video (reply - No).

It was the most fantastic series, and I especially loved bit growing rhubarb on manure in cold frames - fantastic and something I'd like to try for Christmas rhubard. One day perhaps.

Now, of course, I'll just have to go and buy the series on DVD since we don't subscribe to anything more than Freeview. You can get it on DVD if you search the tinterweb....

I watched it at the time. Lovely series. Lovely old man with a sweet nature. We should have cloned him and sent him out to be leaders of men. No more war...just gardens.

Harry Dodson and Peter Thoday - wonderful. Have watched the series twice if not three times over and never get tired of it. I think Harry Dodson did something about growing veg during the war as well. Great viewing for growers.
