  • 100 super earths within 30 light years of Earth!

I was reading an article this morning, and apparantly they have discovered that within 30 light years of earth there upto 100 super earths planets in the goldilocks zone around red dwarfes. 100 planets that could support life?

My first thought was how come we haven't seen space travellers then.

So I did a little calculation and discovered that at our current capabilities it would take us approximately 62,500 years to travel that far, so why would they bother?

So then I thought about star trek, and picard travelling at warp 9, so i did another little calculation, and warp 1 is the speed of light, but I think warp 9 is actually 100,000,000 times the speed of light. Come on Picard how gullible do you think we are??, light travels at 300,000 kilometres per second, and at present we can only achieve 12 kilometres per second. Dream on Picard....

life doesnt neccessarily mean its a form that could travel never mind any that could travel the incredible distances we are talking about.

just means in theory life could survive there. might only be bacteria or something tho

          Milk no sugar ta Di,

VC, you are a very smart quick witted cookie, you do absolutely fine.

JPS, this is true, the goldilocks zone basically means that water can exist in liquid form. Now from a different tack, the Dinosaurs were wiped out by a huge meteor, where would they have been now if that meteor had not hit earth?

Who's to say that life could not be significantly further advanced than our own?

Anyone got a rich tea biscuit?

When you consider the impression that must be cast into the ether and onwards, upwards and outwards to the far reaches of the galaxy and beyond, humans must appear to be a self-centred, antagonistic species, continually at war with itself, and showing no regard for the other inhabitants of its planet, to any being capable of interpreting our radio signals. Would you want to come and visit us?

We are a virus, replicating rapidly and killing our host (the earth), and ready to spread to other hosts (worlds). Would you invite us to come and visit you?

Are you happy to get that off your chest!!

What I don't understand is what is it about the Panda that means we spend so much time, effort, and energy into saving it.

We are a very fickle species there is no mistaking.

I'm hoping that when we get there Di, we don't discover that the life forms are vegetables. More tea vicar?

I had a Panda once, very economical on fuel, maybe that's why?

for all we know we might have the space equivalent of a 'no stopping at any time' sign around this solar sysytem.
If there are species out there who can space/time travel, why on earth would they stop here? We can offer them a badly messed up in a lot of places planet, that's overrun with people who would snatch their hands or the equivalent off for the chance of making a bit more money, because obviously, money makes you healthy....
Of course, they might stop if they were the planet stripping variety in which case we can all expect to die horribly anyway
The dinosaurs were here for 180 million years [give or take a few million], we've only been around for 10 million years, so the answer to your question would be....they'd be in exactly the same place, just with more teeth
