That's what I'm going to do. There is no way I'm going to let daughter fork out the best part of 3K and then have them say well 'we still don't know so we need to go in and have a look and that will cost...just let me think of a number off the top of my head...er another 3K'

To be honest I'm getting the feeling that they are extracting the urine. Yes they do have specialist equipment but I doubt it would cost that much if I went private for a scan and endoscopy.

Anyway this diet she's on is venison. The vet wanted her to have a protein she had never eaten before and I can tell you she ain't that keen because every time I put it in front of her she looks at me as if to say 'What the hell kind of muck is this carp?' and walks away. She obviously finds it so disgusting that she would rather starve to death.

Once my 3 cats are gone I'll never have a pet again. More to the point I won't let anybody force one on me either.

Feeling really negative and frustrated about the whole thing.

Sending an e-hug as its the only thing I can do. Thinking about making a wax effigy of vet specialists and then using pins.......

Big hugs from me too, Donna....I've been there and its hard, very hard.
Have you heard of Burns pet food? I know John Burns, the vet who set it up and I can vouch for the free range nature of his hens' eggs and veggies because he sells the surplus at the farm gate.
Have a look at burns pet nutrition advice and pet health help line | Burns Pet Food and maybe get in touch with the nutritionist to see what food they suggest.

Believe it or not I'm off to my local painsburys to get some venison. Should be some in the frozen section. Going to cook it for her myself. If it doesn't work and she won't eat it I'm going to get my money back on the unopened food.

Tomorrow I'm going to call Birmingham Animal Hospital. Telephone lines only open for emergencies today. I'm going to see if I can get the price of the scan and endoscopy down.

best of luck Donna. Vets do seem to take the mick at times. It didn't cost that much for my mum to have an mri privately.
Maybe you would do better to ask your local hospital.
Seriously though our local chiropractor has a scanner similar to a vets handheld one, and cheerfully scanned a friends dachshund when it was having back problems and the vets wasn't working.
Or could you try the PDSA or Blue Cross to see if they could help?

I have the number of a Blue Cross clinic quite close to us so I'll call them in the morning too.

I have called all the animal charities I can think of and even though I have offered to pay the cost of the treatment they won't treat my cat because we are not in receipt of benefits, and she is not a stray.

I have called another local vet that has the facility to do an ultrasound scan and my long term vet that doesn't have that facility is happy to refer us there as a second opinion. but they wouldn't tell me how much an ultrasound scan would cost.

At this point I would like to say if you have pets and have them insured check how much each illness/injury is covered for. If you go somewhere like Willows (check out their website), the chances are that you will have spent your cover before even getting a diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

The subject of this thread, Brody, has not thrown up now for over 2 weeks. The special venison diet is still not enticing her (even the stuff I bought and cooked her for myself) so that makes me think the vet we saw is full of s***e.

It all makes me think that the whole system is geared to extricating every last penny from devoted pet owners.

Well if my cat has IBD or Chrones I am not going to slavishly look for treatment/cure at any cost. My sister died from chrones related conditions last year. If the NHS couln't save her then I'm damn sure a private vet couldn't save my cat.

I can't help thinking the whole pet insurance/vet fees are a huge scam.

And here she is sitting on a cushion just trying to stay comfy while she potentially starves to death.

I am so going to eat somebody's head if she dies before they diagnose and treat her.

Well to be honest even if they could just say there's nothing we could do we could all cope with that and just hold her in our arms while she has the last pain killer.

I've done it before, and not just with pets.

When my last dog was ill and lost a lot of weight, the vets said that, although they could investigate the cause of the problem, his heart was too weak to risk the anaesthetic it would require to run the tests. They advised against any further tests and I didn't want him to go through the distress of it either. There was only one kind option left. Sometimes its all you can do for someone you care for.

Yes VC I am thinking along the same lines as you but I am the Devil's advocate in this house. OH wants to do everything but doesn't want to spend any money. Daughter wants to spend the money (her money) but not think of the consequences for her down the line.

Our last cat/pet was 20 when she suffered kidney failure which I believe is common in cats and the vet told us there was nothing they could do so was relatively easy to accept.

Brody is nearly 8. But I'm thinking s**t happens just like people. The rest of my family think I'm hard to think that way but they don't try to look after her like I do.

Some cats live to ripe old ages and they're the lucky ones. Most of mine haven't, sadly. Car accidents, leukaemia, kidney failure.... You can only do what is right for your pet and I'm not sure that subjecting her to endoscopys and suchlike tests is in her best interests. I don't think I would go down that route, nothing to do with the money, just because its kinder not to let her suffer more than she has to.
I've had to make these decisions on my own for some years and maybe that's easier because everyone comes at it from a different direction. I hope you can all come to the same decision, whatever that may be. Meanwhile, I hope and pray that Brody is comfortable and not in pain.

Unless you mentioned it and I have missed the post, have you tried giving her a beaten raw egg?
Full of protein and I have never had a cat refuse one.
                            Just a thought.

That's a new one to me and I don't know if I would risk it as I know it would make me sick unless it was in the form of an egg nog!

We are going for a second opinion in the morning at a vets that has the facility to do an ultrasound scan. I will see what she says and decide from there.

I'd try it anyway, Donna - our old toothless Mog absolutely loves raw egg! Good luck, whatever you decide. Have to say, I know what I'd do. ((Hugs))
