  • Community Allotment.

    Hi all.
In our close we have a large grassed area which is never used. Children dont play on it, and it seems a total waste. I am trying to start a community allotment on it, just small plots, with a bench. About 90% of the people around me have very large gardens, as have I, but for people who have not, and have a mind to try and produce there own tasty veg, It seems a good option. I am waiting for the local councils open space officer to get in touch. One of the arguments I could envisage is not enough parking, but the local library backs onto the close and because of the cutbacks is only open 3 mornings a week. They have ample parking. It would be good to bring people together. Anyway, rant over.

    Regards
    Simon CP Gibbins
PS I wonder if there is a Coucil Oficer in charge of holes in the ground.... Bernard Cribbins would know.

My Mum had a huge peice of ground next to her house at the end of a Close which was left to grass. No one used it and the residents of the Close had to pay to keep it cut. When planning permission was granted for the houses it was on the condition that the ground remaned just grass. What a waste!!!!!! A long slog but perhaps you could get the Council to revert such a decision if it was made on the ground you talk about.

Interest your local MP perhaps, citing the mental and physical health benefits for people with all that fresh air and excercise. How it might encourage interest in the local children.
Contact the local papers if refused and start a campaign?

There is aproject in Leeds called Edible Public Space. There is a video on the nominations for seeds thread on here which zaz organised. They might be useful to contact re how theyb did it and what obstacles they had to overcome. They have a website and a facebook page, Im sure Chiara would be happy to offer ideas. Im going to a 3 hour session in Leeds on Thursday night re growing local food in public spaces which should be good. Where abouts are you? It doesnt say on your profile?

I have to add that this project is a free for all project rather than an allotment development. There are lots of ways you could approach it!

No, you posted a visitor message. Go to the green tabs at the top of this page, click on Forum Actions, then on Edit Profile. You can then fill in your details.

No, you're not an idiot. You're just using an application you've never used before. We all need help with things sometimes, so don't be afraid to ask. BTW, well done, your location now shows on your posts
