    Vegetable vandalism!

    Published on Monday 30 April 2012 14:05

TODAY I was shopping in Morrisons with my wife when I saw what I can only describe as an odious pair of cretins damaging goods, the man was ripping bits off broccoli heads and putting them in a bag then leaving the ruined stalks on the stand, when I complained to an assistant he told me that it did happen at times because these people object to paying for the stalk.

Maybe Morrisons should ask their check-out staff to refuse to sell anything but a complete broccoli head and charge the perpetrators for the damaged ones that will have to be thrown away, in a perfect world these two selfish people would choke when they ate their broccoli

When you're buying it by weight, it is a bit much to charge for an inedible stalk, If they're sold per head its different. I would like to believe the price charged reflects the assumed weight of the stalk but doubt it! (That sounds like auditor speak - sorry!).
I dislike the customers who pull grapes off each bunch to taste them, eventually choose a bunch and munch on it all the way around the store until they end up paying for a twig with a handful of grapes on it!

If the broccoli is being sold by weight, it's in the supermarket's interest to leave as much stalk as possible, therefore making the customer pay for something that (unless you are very hardy or have livestock) will be thrown away. Does it matter who throws it away and why *should* we pay for the stalk?

(Wasn't me what dun it at Morrisons though!)

I would imagine if you bought the same weight in just florets, the price would treble, it'd be like buying meat without the bone.

My dog used to go crackers for broccoli and cauliflower stalks, they are very edible.
If i buy a chicken by weight should i insist on the butcher taking all the bones out before popping it on the scale?

My dogs love the stalks too but if I'm choosing broccoli heads by weight, I pick the ones with the least stalk - sorry dogs!

Not exactly a like-for-like comparison. Cut the stalk lower = more profit for the company, cut the stalk higher = better value for the customer. Either way, someone has to cut the stalk.

When they take the p!55 with the stalk length on broccoli I do happily snap a chunk of it off, but I wouldn't mess about removing all the florets and leave the entire stalk behind...that is taking things a bit too far.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

No, I object to certain supermarkets having the longest stalks possible because they charge by weight. I use BH's pocket knife and cut the stalks off.

Also, when I used to buy grapes I always tried one. No way am I paying £3 a kilo for tiny purple lemons.....

                  Supermarket profit margins are HUGE!

My dear old aunt (much missed) would pull the heads off PSB and leave the stalks in the grocers! (and I thought the whole bit was edible!)

I have broken off excessively long stalks on Broccoli in the supermarket before now, though I would draw the line at breaking off just florets! Besides, I have now discovered that if you "peel" the broccoli stems and then slice it as finely as you can manage into julienne strips, it makes a very acceptable addition to a "Slaw"...

I like the tsalks so I'd buy them, but I'd rather have something else besides broccoli....

I cut a load of florets off in my polytunnel yesterday and we ate them for tea tonight with part of a spring cauli, pulled the outer leaves off and didn't bring them home either

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We eat the stalk here. Not the end bit that's got dry but the rest of it gets thrown in.
No one complains. Well not about that anyway.

We eat the stalks too. Cut into long thin strips and steamed with the rest of the broccoli. Very edible.
