I can chat to people in the supermarket (both looking at the same shelf, "that's not much of a reduction!", or "traffic jams in here again" seem to work as ice-breakers about half the time) and I have got to know people at dog agility club very quickly, but I just don't see people who live nearby (except the immediate neighbours either side) to speak to, and would never have the nerve to actually knock on doors!
