Joking aside, I do have a couple of self hypnosis tracks on my phone for sleeping which I listen to when I'm trying to get to sleep, and to get me back to sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night. It does seem to help, I rarely get to hear the end now, although waking up with headphones in can be a bit weird. I haven't managed to get the hang of lucid dreaming though, maybe because I'm asleep before I get to the end of that bit
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
Now a little Shrinking Violet.
Thankfully you DO wake up though, even without playing another track
I would be scared that I'd hypnotise myself and have to stay like it (if you see what I mean!).
No, I'll give all that a wide berth I think.....I prefer to be in control of what happens to me.
I was taught this back in the 80s - it was (and still is) amazing - if you can step aside from the 'expected' negativism, give it a go, I still practice it alongside 'Mindfulness' and it works for me

I would be very interested to learn mo about SH and 'mindfulness' if you would be willing to share more info and your experiences of these. Links or info to any resources you have found helpful would be much appciated.
Thanks in advance!
There are a couple of things - mental hurdles I guess - that I want to get myself over. I've used a form of SH before, when in labour, and I can still do that now. The staff at A&E were greatly impressed when I needed 32 head stitches and put myself in another place until they'd finished three quarters of an hour later.
I can put myself somewhere else by taking ten very deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. As you exhale image the exhaled breath as a long silky floating ribbon...make the ribbon longer and longer with each breath. At the last breath take a mental step forward as if you were going down a flight of stairs - ten stairs. With each stair you become more and more relaxed. When you reach the bottom step you go through a door/gate/portal to somewhere you feel happiest. Imagine all the things you can see and hear, you'll be surprised how much detail you can remember of this favourite quiet, calm place, this sanctuary. Sit down in your sanctuary and rest, you'll know when it's time to leave.
But I have no idea how to talk myself into doing things, so I've bought a book by Valerie Austin. I hope it'll work, although it might take time.

My cousin studied hypnosis so I was a guinea pig. I did have a tape for self hypnosis years ago, and can still use some of it even now. But I've been using subliminal tapes lately and they are doing good. I am shocking at dieting - say the word diet and I immediately feel hungry. So I tried it, figured it was pretty cheap compared to any dieting groups and it was great. I'm not anorexic, but I did have a slow steady weightloss and didn't even have to talk myself out of eating. I'm using one for insomnia atm because I'm a bit stressed and wake up in the night and can't get back to sleep which stresses me even more. It seems to help. I wake up but go back to sleep quite easily which is great.
I think you have to feel comfortable with it. Having been hypnotised before I wasn't worried that I wouldn't be able to resist the ideas. If the ideas are too different then it's just not going to work. There's a subliminal tape to make you love housework..............well that's just WRONG in my opinion so that one would never work even if someone paid me to listen to it.
When you say "There are one or two things I loathe and I want to convince myself I don't loathe them...' it would depend on what you mean by loathe. I could probably force myself to eat oysters if I was hypnotised, but no way I'm ever going to like spiders or snakes hypnotised or not.
My cousin hypnotised me to make it easier to focus on studying and having better recall at exams. It was more about being able to relax and not be stressed. It was the fear of not being able to remember it all that made me unable to focus for too long, and the fear that makes the recall harder too. So it works for me.
Another lady at work tried the weightloss tape and it helped her as well. But you have to use the skill whether its sublimanal tape or self hypnosis. Some people learn it but don't use it and then it doesn't work. Bit like joining a gym or weightwatchers, but not going. Ali
Some days it's hardly worth chewing through the restraints!
