Having spent most of the week sleeping, I managed to miss this thread. Just read it through....
I have no idea what sort of an accent I have. A sort of mongrel Heinz 57, I think. I've picked up snippets from wherever we were posted to worldwide. I've had no trouble reading all of the dialect on here! Someone, in a pub years ago, tried to tell me they knew I was from Barnsley.....I've never been there, but spent five years in Greater Manchester.
I didn't pick up a Glasgow accent when we lived there in the 80s but I can do it effortlessly...that's pure deid gallas! The Shetland Islanders sound very Scandinavian to me, Ananke. My Dad is from Sutherland and even though he left to join up in 1950 and has never been back up there to live, I can still hear his accent. Strangers speaking to him can't.
I'm a bit like Ali, tend to mimic the accent of whomever I'm talking to at the time - I just don't realise I'm doing it and it's gotten me into hot water more than once. I watched a lovely film the other night - Charlie & Boots - with Paul Hogan. I was explaining a really funny bit (when they've broken down and are being towed by two Bogans) and the BH says 'Why the accent?' I'd managed to say everything with a hybrid Australian accent. I also knew the guys were Bogans, but where I got that word from I'll never know. Aussie Rednecks btw.
The BH loves watching Hairy Bikers for the cookery, I just listen for the accent. My kids gave up trying to watch Byker Grove years ago.
I love accents, never waste an opportunity to improve one either!Jules

I did used to have a very broad Yorkshire accent (born in Barnsley), however when we moved over to Lancashire when I was young, my accent was so broad, I actually couldn't be understood by my peers at school etc...
My mum sent me and my sister to drama and elocution lessons, and the Yorkshire and Lancashire is now almost completely gone...
To anyone 'down south' I do sound fairly Northern (I think) but without any specific accent... to people 'up north' I sound posh; and actually used to get teased for my lack of any accent and sounding posh....
On the phone I probably have more of an RP voice than in real life though!

I think most of my accent comes from reading too much Enid Blyton - not that Ay think one ken heve too much of a jolly good thing, what?
So, the Famous Five mixed with Somerset, Bedfordshire, Cheshire, American, Glasgow, a wee bit Doric and some European swearwords..............that's me in a nutshell!Last edited by julesapple; 11-05-2012, 05:07 PM.Jules
