Watched the chap opposite me, dig over the soil leaving it looking like the Somme, leaving all the couch grass in, throw some pea seeds in, cover with about 3 inches of soil, and then wafted a can of water over the whole area ( but not where the peas are) Couch grass 10 - Peas 0. Then he watched his wife on her hands and knees trying to weed strawberries. That was about 6 weeks ago. They've not been back since.

People who sow grass seed on an allotment plot and don't grow anything edible is quite interesting. Oh, and allow the grass to seed along with the thistles, nettles, etc.A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows

Well they might have to cut one of the other trees down and take it too the paint shop so they can match the green properly - some silicone to put the tree back should work!
Actually steaming or flaming weeds is a recognised non chemical way of dealing with weeds - If I had a big enough one for the paddock.......I'm solarising my weeds with black plastic, but it's not quick enough for the weeds man so have to spray some this year. There is a pine spray that works apparently but a bit exxy so will be saviing up for some of that next year. 90 acres and a mattock is a lot of work I can tell you. I'd love a man with a flame thrower.........would he like a holiday in oz?Ali

One bit of old folklore wisdom says to plant tomatoes when the soil is warm enough to sit on with bare buttocks. In surburban areas, use the back of your wrist. Jackie French
