  • Builders bag!

I've been given a builders bag - the big ones they drop sand off in!

What can I do with it?

    Compost bag?
Raised bed? (Would take an awful lot of soil)
Use it to store my manure rather than just have a sprawling heap?

Got to be some more ideas than that?

I've used them for leaf-mulch before.... the problem is, once they are more than half full, they are really difficult to move around...

You don't have to fill it to the brim with soil. Turn the sides down and make a raised bed. Or make compost in it this year and plant into that next year.

Give it a rinse, and take it to the supermarket as your bag for life, you might get a few looks.

Turn the sides down, put your manure in the bottom half, put soil in the top and plant it up with squashes and you will get 2 out of your 3 mentioned.

Pop some late spuds in the sides around the squash and you might get potatoes for Christmas at the same time - just harvest the squash/pumpkin, turn the sides up and slice the pumpkin stem and let the foliage rot down on top of the bag.

Like that one Zaz. I plan something similar for one of the growbeds I bought recently.

I was keen to grow something on my new allotment - I had 3 old compost heaps, I put stable litter in the bottom, a layer of the oldest of the compost heaps and a top layer of MPC. Carrots are growing well in one but not a parsnip in sight in the other so I'm going to put in some squash. I have only half filled them and turned back the sides as Zaz suggests. They are also sitting on the site of nettles/bindweed and round them I have put a thick mulch of stable litter. At home we have a bag full of leaves which we then put into the compost palleter as an extra layer inbetween other things.
