  • Cats and Weigela

I have a Weigela plant and 3 cats. For the last couple of years I've noticed that the cats love the Weigela when it is growing. They Lie on it, chew it and generally go totally catnippy over it but I can't really find anything on the web other than a few other people who have the same problems. Anyone else have this issue?

I have no idea but they are so damn cute when nature gets the better of them.

Behave yourself CS you naughty man.

I have never noticed the weigela fascination with all the local cats - however I don't seem to be able to keep a catnip plant in the garden - they go berserk with it and kill it off by loving it to death.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't!!

I'm sorry, what was that? I am too busy staring at that cute little kitty you've posted! =P I've never heard of a Weigela plant attracting felines.

I know about catnip (I'm having to grow some more due to my last one being just a stump now)and honeysuckle. I also know Australian cats are immune to the effects of catnip but the Weigela gets weirder and weirder as most the stuff I've read if about Male cats going nuts for it and Females not being too bothered.

Nobody has told Maisie that she shouldn't be that bothered about catnip.

My lot arent even bothered by catnip. I have a lovely big untouched catnip plant by the back door that doesnt get so much as a sniff, and my cat grass planter in the run rarely gets nibbled (although one of the dogs is part cow and grazes there all day!).
Also my one outdoor kitty is totally garden friendly, he prefers to poop on hard surfaces......like my floor next to the litter tray!

                          My cats are weirdos....

Male cats are the only ones interested in Weigela not females. Catnip can effect both sexes.

Not all cats are affected by catnip. In Australia none of the cats are affected. Honeysuckle can be used as a replacement.

Apparently in the 1960's Catnip was used in stead of marijuana!!!

My sister (not an animal lover) had catnip in her garden many years ago now... she complained about all the neighbouring cats coming to play with it.... I resisted the temptation to ask what the blazes she expected....
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
