Wisley visit next Tuesday

I'm going to Wisley next Tuesday and staying overnight in Guildford.

Woop!

Bit worried about the traffic from Brum to Wisley, especially the M25. I'm an M25 virgin....

I've heard lots of horror stories.

Will it really be THAT bad?.

Yer it can be,but is much improved since terminal 5 has its own link road,a SERIOUS word of warning here .. When the variable speed limit/s is/are in force (flashing overhead signs) the speed cameras are automatically set to the reduced speed,be certain that when you go under the gantry you are at or below speed shown (even if the road ahead is clear) as the first camera is directly behind the restriction sign.

It is best to avoid the M25 during the rush 2 hours am and pm! I hope you enjoy Wisley it is one of my favourite places

Tuesday won't be rush hour as it's a bank holiday so traffic should be ok, probably the worst bt will be the queue to get into Wisley if the weather is good. just take it slow and if you get a little bit stuck just think about the lovely gardens you'll be seeing at Wisley.
Think of me doing the reverse trip on Wednesday morning going to BBC GWL

Unfortunately you have all the bad bits from M40 to M25 BUT on the good news side, you are "going the wrong way" in the morning (as much as you can be), so it may not be too awful.

Recommend getting there before 9 if poss as because its bank hols people will start travelling then.

Going home will be OK until you hit Staines (j10?), when you will slow right down until you get to the M40, but just stick with it!

When you get to the M4 going home, you have 4 lanes, but the inside lane turns into a run off lane for the M4 and all the M4 folk are tying to squeeze on into the inside lane, often at the last minute. This makes this lane very slow, so move over!

and yes, I am the saddo who has spent the last 15 years on the M25, M4, M40 and M1 (with M3 thrown in for good measure) and "traffic dynamics" become 2nd nature.

Boy am I glad I got to retire early, and so in my OH....

Was also going to add that you shouldn't sit in the far left lane unless your turn is the next one as it regularly becomes the turn off so you have to move over. Better to be one lane in until you know the next exit is yours.

Hi OM, you'll be fine. As has already been mentioned watch the variable speed restrictions (especially around Jct 13 - Staines) as these will "have you". Also watch out for any average speed limits in place over the weekend. The M25 junctions around Staines (jct 13) and heathrow will be busy as people will be coming back from a long weekend abroad / weekend spent by the river / windsor.

Be aware of which lane you are (don't be a middle lane hogger), and remember that the lorries may not be able to see you as well as you think so give them a little space. I'm not sure if this is the case throughout the UK but I tend to put my hazard lights on if traffic on the motorway ahead of me is at a standstill, it gives people behind you a bit more of a warning that you are coming to a stop.

More importantly have a fab time, it's a beautiful place to spend a day

Yes, in the morning (mind you I've never done it in the evening!!)

It annoys me when people call it 'the fast lane' - the limit is still 70! And if I'm in it, I'll only go 70 no matter how fast your car is behind me!

Highway code ... Rule 264 .........

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.

I do not drive in anything other than the left lane - if I'm in an outside lane it is because I'm overtaking.

My point was that if I am in the outside lane I will not go over the speed limit. The limit in lane 3 is the same as in lane 1.

Have a look at the new bonsai walk and let me know what its like please.

You could always avoid M25.
Go down A34 from Oxfor to M4 turn off toward Bracknell J10 and use A329 to Guilford. Easy

M25 not too bad as people have said avoid rush hours.

Fair enough but be warned on M25 most of the rules seem to go out the window,including the NOT overtaking on the left one
