Longest day means you can harvest yer onions! I love the "old fashioned" idea of planting on the shortest day and harvesting on the longest....

Although really its to do with onion growth being triggered by longer days and stopped again by shorter ones.

Celebrate the Summer solstice in style - dig up an onion!

Ha ha ha!!!! my onion sets were planted late and their leaves are about 2" high. No sign of the set swelling yet either!

But- as you say, I will sacrifice one just to have a laaaarf!

Ever the gardening optimist, or just plain naieve, I am still thinking that a proper summer is somewhere around the corner....there is still the rest of june, then july, august and september to come, and i have read on the forums of some people harvesting tomatoes as late as november last year, so who knows!

Dismayed by the weather on often a daily basis, i am, but there is still this chink of hope, dim as it may be, that the best is yet to come.
Spelling errors are my area of expertise. Apologies if my jumbled up mind/words cause offence.

          Oh - I hope so....I really do!

I recall we had a 'flamin June' a few years ago where it rained almost every day. Thing is that I can't recall what the wearher did after that!

I vote for a 'flaming June' next year then!

Easy mistake, seeing as you're in Normandy an' all

I was going to post a similar comment, Pisk! I'm so sick of it I've applied for a 'proper' job. Knowing my cr@p luck, I'll get it and then the chuffin' weather will change, and I'll have lost all my customers...

I am really, really sick of it now. I can only think of one plus point; my IBC container, attached to the garage down-pipe is FULL!

Well the I just figured out why the weather is so confused this year & if history is anything to go by it will deffo be getting warmer & drier soon

Not sure if there will actually be a longest day/summer solstice this year though as it goes hand in glove with another annual event that has been removed from the calender this year, thus the reasoning for the above statement

!! Glastonbury has been cancelled !!

Whoever cancelled it, should've told 'them upstairs' that we didn't need the Glasto weather this year!

We had snow in June in the mid 1970's. We were living in Yorkshire and driving down to Devon to visit the rellies.
