We lived in our self-build while self building which was very, very stupid. We arrived in January to an uninsulated house shell (external walls, roof, door, windows only). Our solar panels didn't arrive for two weeks so we were reliant on old batteries for power, plus an ancient refurbed generator.
We had a gas fire which couldn't possibly heat the space, but got the temperature up to about 15 if you sat right in front of it. Getting out of bed was a nightmare... And I cannot believe how much carbo we ate just to stay warm!!
Now we have a fridge and a dishwasher and broadband and its AMAZING!

          Why????

We made a conscious decision not to have one.

Not economically good, not resourcefully good, they smell unless you put 'em on everyday (which almost no one does), they break down.... You need extra room for them. you have to load and unload them...

Why not just wash up? Then you can talk to each other as a family as one washes, one dries, one puts away - however many you have!!!

I would like a dishwasher. They aren't particularly firendly, i haven't got room for one, and I'm definitely not getting one. It doesn't stop me wanting one though Hard water makes tea mugs a pain to clean...

I have a dishwasher - can't remember the last time I used it. I gave away one in the other house - took up too much valuable space. You could have had it Nicos, if only I'd known!!

I always wanted a dishwasher then I got Mr Z.

My washing machine broke down last week after we returned from hols, with 2 loads still to do and they had to be done so that we had stuff to wear to work...

Just got it fixed tonight. It's surprising how quick you move into 'how to wash 2 loads of clothes in the bath and get them rinsed and hung up before leaving on holiday' mode...I probably had them done and dusted faster than the machine would do them.

A man came today and fixed it. Phew! Think I'd lose the enthusiasm after a few weeks of it though.

Electrickery.............without it I'd have no cooker, no microwave, no kettle , no washing machine, no fridges or freezers, no lighting, no shower, no heating , and most importantly no internet.......you don't think about plugging things in and turning them on until the dreaded power cut.......

teachers and everyone else who seems to provide so - called 'wrap-around' care for people who had kids by accident or thought it might be a good idea because everyone else was doing it and then couldn't be bothered to actually spend time with their own children

Teachers and PARENTS need to teach how not to have kids if you can't provide for them.

I've been there so I know. And btw they are doing fine and are tax payers.

I was in hospital in the Midlands when I was about 23 years old and a man was brought in there who was allergic to anaesthetic and had to have his leg removed. The surgeon gave him about 10 bottles of brandy or some other spirit before and more during the operation. He survived but I think the operating staff needed the brandy as well afterwards!
