  • We used to play "Kick the tin" 'cos we didn't have any balls
Can't remember the rules but it involved the person who was "on it" kicking an old tin can as far as possible and fetching it back while everyone else scarpered..... Nah, there must have been more to it than that It was very noisy but the neighbours didn't seem to mind, probably because they all had kids who were playing it!

    • We had a similar game called kick the can!!

The can was placed down and the person on it counted while the others ran and hid. The one on then had to spot the others and make it back to the can before them. If so they were on it, if you made it to the can before the person on it you were immune from being caught.

Same principle but we called it "Kick out ball". If the ball was kicked out by one of the hiders, the others could change their hiding position if they wanted.

You was posh, we couldn't afford a ball, we had to make do with a can in Wales.

                • Does this explain the Football/rugby divide between England and Wales? We had to make do with funny shaped cans, while the English had round balls to play with ?

                  • It doesn't explain where the phrase kick the bucket came from.

The wooden frame that was used to hang animals up by their feet for slaughter was called a bucket. Not unnaturally they were likely to struggle or to spasm after death and hence 'kick the bucket'.
