Seeds?

Why is it that when you buy seeds there are always far more than you will need, and why do some packets have more than your average allotment site could cope with also!!

Lets be honest, how many courgette plants can you cope with, and how many seeds did you have in your packet?

Not just you. I bought some snowball turnip seeds from eBay - a packet of 3000 for 99p.

I like turnips, but 3000? C'mon!

two reasons:
1 - basic business sense - people think "better value"
2 - some people want or need to sow seeds multiple times (big plots / share with friends / crop failures etc) so they want packs with more seeds than they really need

i've seen a lot of seeds this year in smaller quantities .... 6 of this, 10 of that .... and a lot of packets of smaller quantities seem to be targeting "newbies" .... maybe to appear less intimidating ??

Anyone want to grow 1700 turnips, I have a packet of 1750 seeds and 50 will be more than I'll ever want to eat!
So we should set up another sort of seed swap! We each buy an over-generous packet of seeds, divide them up into manageable quantities and share them out. Then, with all the money we'll have saved we can spend it on .............???/
(Sorry Zaz, if this is what the seed swap does but this is more targeted).

I do understand FG, but my plot is more than ample for my family at approx 300sqm but even so, I wouldn't want to give room to more than 5 or 6 courguettes, but most packets generally have 25. Accepting some failure, I can understand but I always plant more than I need, so as not to waste them.

I'm not organised enough for seed swap VC, I get carried away with Wyevale's seed sale in September and have more seeds than you can shake a stick at.

Yes it is the cardi in me, always out for a bargain, even if that bargain is more than I can cope with.

Oh and turnips, 1 would be more than enough in my house, can't stand the things.....I have a packet of them though.

I'm the same with the cheapo end of season seeds too. And I always buy far than I can ever hope to grow - just because they're cheap! I am embarrassed and ashamed of my seed stash - I could start my own shop

sow 8, then allowing for failures, you still get 5 or 6 .... and same next year from the same packet .... and still a few spare in case a whole batch fails or you want a whole lot more than last year ....

I carry my seed packets over to the next year, and the next ... the only excess I seem to get is with cabbage seed. 300 really is too many, I only grow a dozen a year

There's always moreveg.co.uk - I got 6 seeds of one type of courgette and 3 of another. (Still too many as I only wanted one of each, but then I only had one out of two seeds germinate properly in both cases.) Wish I'd bought a bigger packet of rocket seeds, though.

just save whats left over for next year,or seed swap,but i would suggest smaller pkts of PARSNIPS as these no good to keep,

700 this year, 700 next year, leaves you 350 seeds in case you're VERY hungry ...

As already said just save them for the next year, I've just finished a Seeds of Italy pkt of lettuce which was 5years old, still germinating well and I've still got some courgette seeds also from SOI bought at the same time.
Don't waste'em - save'em and use'em
