I thought they just bobbed around, moored to great big blocks on the seabed! I'd never really given it a thought
This must be the one thing I've learnt today - thanks Mikey

I think its amazing that you can get all that weight basically suspended on silt, without and fixing/anchor points other than suction.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

Could you do that with a knee joint? Just a passing thought. Off to work now.

Drat, she's gone....not sure exactly what you mean donna?

Can you suspend the body weight on a floating knee?, probably but the knee would be locked in space it wouldn't have the flexibility to move.

have you ever noticed how hard it is to lift your feet out of the sand when water is floating around it. This is the principle of the oil rig.

So if a rig breaks free it is because of a loss of suction?
The only image I have is of those kid's bows and arrows, where there was a suction cup on the end of the arrow, that you could stick to your forehead with a bit of spit.
So we have a big arrow thingy (that is actually a tube) sucking air out from the seabed, and the rig is built around the shaft of the arrow?
            No need to explain!!

Yes when they want to move an oil rig, they reduce the pressure and float the rig and move it somewhere else. It's time consuming but you can even bring it all into port and decommission it.

There are other types that are purely floating platforms where the depths are too great. I think the oil rig is probably one of man greatest invention. Its a civil engineering marvel.

So when these islands of ours become too overcrowded, they will build floating towns off shore, anchored by suction and the land that would have been used for housing will be used for food production instead.

Not as far fetched as it seems, when the sea levels rise large parts of the south west will be under water.

What are you two like? I turn my back for a couple of hours and you're grabbing all my assets
If the sea level rises as far as this house, that's the end of life as we know it, but at least I'll have less steps to climb to the front door!!
