  • Timely Freecycle 'win'

Yesterday I spent 3 hours at the plot, a good proportion of the time clipping the grass paths around and through the plot. The long handle clippers are too long for me, (being vertically challenged as I am), so I ended up with a very painful muscle strain in my shoulder, which gets more painful if I look to the left
I had just gone onto my laptop to check emails at lunchtime today when a freecycle notification came up for a petrol strimmer. Typing as fast as I could I explained why I would be really grateful if they would consider me. Just as I sent it, the same people offered a qualcast hand mower, so I asked for that if the strimmer was gone. The lady came back to me and offered me both, which was great news. I took her a pot of chilli plum jam as thanks.
I think I'll probably find the mower easier to use once I feel a bit better, but son no2 will probably strim down the taller grass for me in the meantime.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

It is nice to hear of a freecycle win, BarleySugar! I mostly use our local group for getting rid of stuff - never seem to have won anything I wanted!

Fantastic. Like Jeanied, I just tend to use our local freecycle to get rid of unwanted items.
If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't!!

Well done BS, it's lovely to hear news like this. I'm after a very small, old fashioned hand mower for in front of my stayput and around the beds. Although I'm tall, the long-handled shears still make my shoulders ache.

Well done, BS. Nice timing! Glad you got both items too. I use Freecycle to pass on unwanted stuff as I'm a great recycler.

I keep looking on Freecycle (and hoping!) as I'd love an old Singer Treadle sewing machine - I had one once but had to get rid of it when I moved to Germany. I keep bidding on Ebay too but the best ones seem to be a long distance from South Wales.

Are you on Cardiff Freecycle, LL? They do come up on there from time to time.

Hi VC - No, I'm on Caerphilly and Torfaen and look at Abergavenny sometimes. I'll check them out, thanks.

There's a second hand/junk shop in Newport called Strawberry Water (I think), I'm sure I saw one in there a few months ago. Maybe worth giving them a tinkle

I give stuff away too, and I don't really mind if people end up selling it, they are welcome to as my aim is to keep it from landfill. Mind you as has been said many times, a polite request or answer goes a long way in me making a choice and I do appreciate prompt collection. When I have got something I often gift a jar of jam or chutney as a thank you.

I don't think many people on our groups use the waiting policy, it seems to be first come first served, which can limit creativity in a response.

LL, I've noticed that when an item is posted there tends to be a flurry of requests, or vice versa, so it might be an idea to post a wanted, it might jog someone's memory of one hidden away in the attic.

Offered on Cardiff Freecycle today -
OFFERED: Very old Singer sewing machine (Penylan)
Hi, this is REALLY old, but in working order. It's in it's own ancient wooden
box, which has seen better days! The only problem is that the metal slide cover
over the bobin house is missing. It still works without it though. Maggie

Really pleased for you BS its nice to get something back after giving on freecycle. I know when we filled in our pond to make my veg plot we had a lot of interest in the plants and shrubs.

I know its not a treadle, LD, but it was offered only this afternoon and I wanted to show LL how often old Singer sewing machines came up on Freecycle.
My Mum had a treadle Singer and you could use it manually or with the treadle. I was useless with both

Thanks MM - I'll give them a ring, I think they are near the back of the market, I'd forgotten about them.
