But we're not here to discuss my phone but Lottie's satnav thingy - I can empathise but not help, that's all
as regards my original question,i came to the conclusions the answer is a resounding NO lol,

I too write down directions on a piece of paper, large enough so that I can see them at a glance and write things like: Turn R at next R/B (turn right at next roundabout) etc.
You write down whatever makes sense to you and that you understand best.

You CAN do it LD - and none of us are putting you down - we are encouragers!!
Like VC says, try going to a new place near to where you live to start with until you feel comfortable with your directions, then try somewhere else.

Personally I don't like sat navs at all - I far prefer a map.
In my defence, wales has longer roads, and few of them lol,and here is a jungle,oh dear,

My Mum passed her test in her 60s, when my father was unable to drive because of his eyesight. So rather than them both staying home, she learnt to drive and passed 2nd time. My father was a terrible passenger, always criticizing but Mum had to ignore that, otherwise they would never have left the house. After Dad died Mum kept on driving as it was her bit of freedom. She's stopped now, thankfully, but she's still out everyday on the bus somewhere and she's 92.
Generally, men do not make good passengers and it was usually easier for me to be passenger and navigator when I was married. But I always had my own car too and had plenty of driving to do with my work so I didn't mind being chauffered around when we were out together. You must do whatever you're comfortable with but also maintain your independence.
Just do it bit by bit Lottie, and do it the old fashioned way with maps

VC your route notes are not a million miles off the "tulip navigation" (got the thread onto GYO at last ) method we used when rallying in the 60's & 70's .......... Tulips

Just checked the population figures for Leicester (280,000) and Cardiff (330,000) so that must mean there are more roads in this jungle than yours

I feel used!! I was always intrigued by the navigator's instructions to the rally drivers, when watching it on the TV. Can't remember them now but it was so succinct - an angle and a direction, maybe?

lottieDolly I'm going to disagree with most people on here and say get a new satnav. It will help you no end with confidence if you go anywhere new alone, and the in-car arguments it saves between driver/navigator is amazing. Even though I am a good map reader and have driven both in England and the length of France and Spain without a satnav in the past (and one one occasion Spain without a map - I forgot it!) I think my satnav is great and it even tells me to turn before I get to a junction and which lane I need rather than telling me after a turn or telling me to turn right when I am in the left hand lane like a certain other nameless (but I married him) navigator does. I don't bother with mine for local driving and always use common sense as well but if it died I'd definately buy a replacement. I once used it when towing a yacht in the lake district and the peace of mind of knowing I wasn't going to end up stuck at the end of a dead end with a big boat stuck behind me was wonderfull. Unfortunately though you can't blame it when you drive into the centre aisle in a filling station with a quite low canopy overhead and a yacht on a trailer behind you. But thats another story

That's "stage" rallying, then its known route so it's information to aid the driver like, direction of bend, angle of bend, camber direction, rate of incline/decline,surface condition & any other specifics the driver asks for in advance.
Tulips are to show junctions & distances between in road rallies, there are others like navigating by OS spot heights & contour marks

See how I helped you get Tulips into the conversation again! There's so much that I don't know, but I've learnt something new today - thanks

I've just bought an android phone that has Google Maps, and a car that supposedly has Bluetooth (whatever that is and I don't know whether its necessary for this or not). I've spent most of this afternoon trying to understand how they all work. Think I'll stick with the road map and a bit of cardboard until I find my intelligent head
If you have a stereo system with a 3.5mm jack (same as earphone socket on phone), you are there. Just plug your phone into the stereo via the jacks (you can pick up a lead for about a squid) & charge the phone via the cigarette lighter ( I don't think they call it that these days). Select AUX on your stereo and Bob's your auntie.

Thank you Auntie Bob! I'm sure there are all those AUX thingys as I read about them in the car handbook. Also, I remember the salesman spent more time telling how me I could plug my MP3 Player in, than how to start the car. He wasn't so good at telling me what MP stood for though!
