It's news to me! I think I've had duff advice in the past.In fact I seem to remember Monty Don saying that if the roots aren't holding the soil/compost together then it's too early to pot on - if this research is right they should have moved on way before that as they will have sensed the size of the space and slowed growth.
Better check all my seedlings ...

Gardeners are always telling us not to plant into too big a pot. I've never understood that as how the heck does a plant know whether it's in a pot or in the ground? I can understand a plant not liking having its roots restricted, but how can it be aware of too much space?
Too much for my feeble brain....
