  • The injecting of the cleaner and inhibitor are very straight forward. I won't go into detail until your ready but its a 5 minute job for the experienced so it won't take you long at all. Thats why we have gone for the Fernox Express products.

Excellent Place VC SWMBO's only 5ft and a tadpole so she will not be able to reach without ladders.

    • This thread sort of reminds me of the time I put windscreen washer in my engine coolant bottle by mistake a couple of winters ago ... and dashed to the vine in a panic. All was well in the end with some sensible advice and a bit of to-ing and fr-oing to the car with top up liquids and a big syringe!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      • Thanks Colin....I'm off to bed so will bid you goodnight....catch up again very soon.

          • In that case VC I will take the glass and let it warm whilst I shower and then sit in my chair (yes I am now allowed my own chair) and gently sip it.

5ft 2" that rather tall SWMBO's 5ft and 1/2" in her st...... and don't anyone dare forget the 1/2".

Good night all and thanks for the fun.

              • Hi folks, back again....

Applied the sealant at about 12.15hrs today. I hope i've done it ok, it's hard to know if i've managed to get it right up against the join between nut and vessel all the way around, guess I'll find out when I turn it all back on.

Talking of turning it back on because it's quite thick and gloopy, I think I shall leave the boiler off until tomorrow to be sure it's set.

Ordered the F5.....so onto cleaning the system next!

Hope you've all had a good week.

                        • Great thats just what we need.

The bit in the middle which you release to let out any air is called the air pip. The complete item is the air tap. At the other end of the radiator should be a chrome nut directly opposite the air tap.

When you get your Fernox Express it should have with it a black plastic addaptor with a 1/2" thread on one end and at the other end fits the aerosol can. It also has a trigger to allow you to fit the can without discharging the contents.

You will need your spanner, an air tap key, some PTFE, a couple of old towels or similar and a jug.

On the radiator there are two valves the wheelhead which you would use to turn the radiator on and off and the lockshield (with a plain plastic cap) which is used to balance the water flow through the system.

First you turn off the radiator valves firmly. With the lockshield you take off the plastic cap and inside is a spindle with two flats or maybe a square for your spanner, it turns off in a clockwise direction. As you turn of the lockshield count the nuber of turns, this is important as you will turn it back on using the same number of turns. If you turn it on to little the rad will stay cold, to much and it will take water from an other rad. This valve may be turned on as little as 1/2 a turn as it is the first radiator from the boiler.

Once the valves are turned fully off open the air pip to release any pressure catching the water in your jug. This will also tell you that the valves are correctly turned off as the water flow will stop. Have one of your towels placed below the air tap to catch any spillage.

When you are happy that all of the pressure has been released tighten the air pip. Now go to the other end of the radiator and placing your other towel under the end to catch any spillage remove the chrome 1/2" plug. Apply 4 turns of PTFE to the threads of the plug. Place it where you can easily reach it.

Screw in the black addaptor and carefully attach the aerosol can. Now open one of the radiator valve and squeeze the trigger you will hear a gush to let you know the fluid is being injected, it will only take seconds. Now turn off the valve you opened and remove the can and addaptor there will be some spillage but you will be able to catch this in your towels.

Replace the plug tighten and turn on the valves, check vent the radiator 'jobs a goodun' as they say.

This post may be amended over the next 24 hours if I realise I have missed something.

                              To confirm.

                              Pic 31 is Wheelhead
                              Pic 32 is Lockshield
                              Pics 33 Silver Nut

I think the silver nut it what I take off and inject the F5 into.....not sure though as I'm confused with what you've written after telling me to turn off the wheelhead and lockshield valves. I don't think you say where to inject it?

The bit that I've underlined in your post confuses me....
                              Which valve do I open?
How can I open a valve when i'm holding the F5 in the hole?
How do I know how much F5 to inject?

Can you put * where you change anything on the original instructions so I know what to look for?

                              • All 3 pics correct, it looks like the nut/plug has got some kind of fancy plastic cap on it, this should flip off using a flat blade screwdriver.

Open any of the radiator valves but I suggest the one below the plug as you will be able to reach this whilst supporting the aerosol can. I think you will get a clearer idea when you get your hands on the black adaptor. The idea of opening the valve is to give the cleansing liquid somewhere to go when you squeeze the trigger.

As to the amount the aerosol contains the correct amount of liquid for the job and it will inject it all in one go.
