  • I don't want to seem rude but I have to ask, you have turned off the drain cock and removed the hosepipe?

    • Pressure is holding at 1.4 bars.

      Nothing leaking outsire.

Low pressure light just gone out.

Slight leak on top of the pressure valve where the pressure gauge connects to the holder then nut....what kind of sealant would you recommend, there appeared to be some cement like stuff on the last one.

Hot water now on and heating I hope!

        • Ok turn on both heating valves and fire the boiler you should hear gurgling noise'e so dont worry about that. The first thing to do is listen to the pump if that is noisy trun off and let me know.

Just how much of a leak is there on the vessel.

          • Pressure has risen to 1.8 bar and boiler has just stopped firing...I was getting worried there!!

The leak isn't where I said before it's the nut on the right hand side of this pic....above the vessel....opposite the pressure gauge.

In error I tried to undo this bolt earlier when trying to disconnect the flexi hose. It didn't seem to do anything....just turn....now I can't get it stop dripping, albeit dripping very, very slowly.

            • OK not a problem, I take it you mean the nut that goes onto the brass fitting not the one you ahve made up with PTFE tape.

If so this is a compression fitting and should tighten up but you will need two spanners one to hold the body of the fitting and one to turn the nut. I would think that if you have tried to turn the nut with just one spanner the whole fitting as started to rotate.

Yes you got it....the 2 I undid for the hoses are those with the PTFE tape, its the other one and you're quite right the whole bloody thing keeps rotating ! Whereabouts is the best place to hold the fitting as it's round and keeps on turning.

I can't believe you have talked or rather, typed me through all this!!! You are an amazing teacher.

                • OK do this gently and carefully the fitting it's self is a non return valve design to keep the system waters from mixing with the potable water which is on the right hand side of the valve.

The joint you are going to tighten therefore is live to the system waters and should you get it wrong no heating or hot water until you have a replacement valve.

From what I can see the valve has two flats both in the vertical plain one front and one back that is where to fit your spanner.

It looks like the easiest way to approach this would be to fit the spanner from above as the vessel is in the way below. Push this spanner back toward the boiler and with your other spanner apply a downward pressure half a turn should make an improvement

                    • I'VE DONE IT!!!!!!!

Who'd have thought it....I've fitted a new expansion vessel to my horrible boiler!!!!

                      Leak has been sealed.

Pressure has remained stable at 1.8 bars.

I've now turned the water off for the night (heating is obviously off)

What pressure should the gauge read in the morning if all is working well? I'm so used to it being on 0 I can't remember what it should be.

                      • Any where between 1 and 1.4bar.

In the morning before you switch on have another look at that joint. Things will have cooled down and contracted overnight you may just have to give it another 'nip up' as we people in the trade say.

                        WELL DONE YOU.
