  • And calm....

Before I order the F5 Express tomorrow are there any other bits that are really vital.....I'd like to give my boiler as much of a service as possible.

It's not the boiler that's stressing me....this has been a great learning curve!

            • Thats OK then. I have been having a think about you loosing two expansion vessels so quickly and one thought was that you may have a very large system therefore overloading the vessel.

I can't think of much more you could do with regards to servicing the system at this time, cleaning and inhibiting the waters will certainly help. Then we let it run for a while and see how it performs.

              • I think i've been jinxed!

In the first two, the smaller insulated unit top left rear, which has water in it, perished and flooded the floor, the second also had a knackered expansion vessel. both were between 14 and 16 months.

This is the first boiler which hasn't dropped pressure almost from the beginning....this only started to drop at the beginning of this year.

I really want to try and keep this one going as when/if it fails I will have to have a new boiler or heating system........I don't want to think about the cost of that.

                • Joanna,

The way your going you will be installing everything except the boiler yourself and probably making a damn good job of it.

                    • I tell the truth. Installing the radiators and pipe work can be hard work but if someone has done the design for you its not technically difficult.

Installing a modern Band A boiler though is a different kettle of fish to commission the appliance properly you need at least £800 worth of tooling and of course it is also against the law.

                      • I'd really like to move away from oil boilers....just because of my experience so far.

I've heard biomass boilers are pretty good but they probably cost the earth too.

                        • Sorry I have no experience of them I specialise in gas nowadays. I used to be ticketed for oil but there really wasn't enough work round here to warrant the expence of keeping it up. Plus as I often says about boilers, I am nearing the end of my service life and you won't be able to get spares for me in the near future. So I couldn't be @rsed with going to college twice every five years.

Anyway its dram time. Goodnight all, catch you on the morrow.

                            • Right, here we go again!

I have my LS-X. The instructions say to relieve pressure before applying....I'm assuming this only matters if you are applying it to a compression joint?

Basically I want to check with you if I can apply it to the big nut on top of the Expansion Vessel with the hot water still on or if I need to turn the boiler off and allow it to cool first. It says 2-12 hrs to set.

                              • Good afternoon all. The Joanna & Colin show returns, we'll be on TV next LOL.

First you need to turn the boiler off and let it cool. You will also have to release the pressure in the system so that the gauge reads zero. That way there will be no pressurised water to push through the putty whilst it sets. Hose pipe, drain cock and spanner should do the job.
