  • Why do I need to drain the system again?

Can't I just turn off the boiler and release the pressure to zero, wait for it to cool and apply the putty....I wasn't going to undo the vessel or flexi hoses again......just apply the putty to the nut whilst it's in situ....

The Colin and Joanna show....not sure how entertaining that would be for others.....works for me though, I'm having a ball!

    • Joanna, I did not explain properly. Valve off as before and use the drain cock to release the pressure as you say down to zero.

You've lost me, I'm very confoozled.....

          Which valve off?
When I've released pressure before I've used the pressure release valve, pulled it up, it then releases the pressure.

I don't understand the mentioning of the drain cock....why do I need to drain the system?

Sorry for being dim....it's been a long day

              • New Title, Peanuts & Potty do Plumbing sounds rather swish dont you think.

                OK Joanna.

The valves I mean are the ones you turned off when you changed the expansion vessel. The reason for this is that approx 2ft in height of standing water will apply a pressure of 1lb per square inch on the joint. Turning the valves off before lowering the pressure will stop this.

You may use the safety discharge valve but I prefer not to do this as it can damage the seat/spring or you can get system debris on the seat which will scratch it and then you end up changing the discharge valve as well.

Sorry about not explaining very well but because this is something I do on a regular basis I sort of go into auto mode and do things without thinking and then forget to explain them to you.

You don't have to drain the boiler just watch the gauge and when it reaches zero close what ever valve/cock you are using.

                  • Peanut and Potty do plumbing ....there could be milage in that you know....it's very catchy!

I shall be doing this on Saturday morning as the pressure will probably be around 0.4 bar and the system cold.

Ok...so let me clarify what to do:

Turn off the 2 hot water lever valves.
Release pressure to zero through pressure release valve.

Then I can unhook the vessel and apply putty around the nut.

How long would you recommend I leave the boiler off for the putty to dry?

                    • The putty will go touch dry fairly quickly, but this is only the outer skin. Press it gently with the pad of your finger and when you get to the stage were there is firm resistance try with your nail. If you cant push your nail in its worth a try.

The actual drying time will depend on temperature and atmospheric moisture. Thats why they give such a variable drying time in the instructions.

All being well I shall pop in on Sat lunch so if you have any questions I should pick them up.
