hmmmm school - not the happiest days of my life- mostly spent trying to keep out of the way of some of the other not so nice kids.
The teachers/school seemed only to worry about winning sports events!!!!

I would love to go back and say this to my old school-

Girls are not all going to be office workers
Boys are not all going to be mechanics or builders

I would love to have known how many fantastic opportunities are out there, how many paths I could have taken if only I had been shown... to have been able to learn about geology, palaeontology, nature, horticulture, conservation, forestry, planets, the sun, the universe!

I love the job I have now, but when I see people easing fossils out of rocks or working out how the world has been shaped over the years..........ahhh well.....
Then I remember - to be very grateful for what I have, and learn more about the things I love. It is never to late.

      It is.

A litre is a kilo of water at 20 deg c. Everything else is relative.

So if something is drier than water, a litre of that will be less than a kilo.

A litre of polystyrene balls would weight less than a litre of treacle. Much less!

Like you Headfry I didn't like school and if I went back I would tell them that us 'gels' were not all destined to be farmers' wives and we did need to have careers!
And cookery classes should not have been only offered to the lower sets.

Now I am in the lucky position to be in school three times a week on a voluntary basis without any responsibility whatsoever! I am learning new stuff every day - mostly in the field of Maths! What is even nicer is that I have some keen 9 year olds learning along with me and genuinely enjoying the process of discovery!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks Zaz - I think! You've just thrown yet another variable into the 56 litre bag of compost scenario
There used to be a trick question about what is heavier, a ton of coal or a ton of feathers. So a kilo of compost would weigh the same as a kilo of feathers.
But a litre of compost would not weigh the same as a litre of feathers?
So why do they sell compost by the litre? How, apart from physically weighing a bag of compost, can I know how heavy it is..........
It just makes no sense to me whatsoever

Hated school. Pissed about. Didn't believe i had any potential and no one told me i had. Wouldn't go back there unless it was to tell myself that i was okay just as i was, that it was okay to be me, that value and self worth do not equate with qualifications alone, if at all.
Spelling errors are my area of expertise. Apologies if my jumbled up mind/words cause offence.

VC, I think you're becoming a bit too obsessed with compost

So on to the school thing...what a waste of my life that was!
I've learned more since leaving school than I ever learned at school and I've forgotten most of what I did learn at school.

The teachers were next to useless, sure they probably had knowledge of the subjects that they 'taught' but they didn't have the skills to acceptably convey their knowledge to the students.
The kids were mostly nasty b@5t@rd5 and were happiest when they were making other kids' lives a misery.

I didn't need to know about arable farming in Leningrad.
I didn't need to know the chemical formula for zinc oxide.
The art teacher, nice though he was, spent more time watching me work than he ever spent teaching anything, because I was better at art than he was.
The woodwork teacher was a weirdo who would pat boys on the bottom and say "Well done" but never did it to the girls, not that he should have done but he shouldn't have been touching boys either.
The technical-drawing teacher was often heard to say "They're not construction lines, they're tram lines, if you don't start doing them right I'll whip you with barbed wire and boil you in oil" and he wasn't averse to throwing things at the kids who talked during his class. He would also walk up from behind and take your trapezius muscles (the ones that extend from the back of your neck to your shoulders) between his fingers and thumbs and squeeze with the deliberate intention of causing pain. This usually resulted in a high-pitched squeal but when he did it to me I calmly said "Ooh that's nice...right a bit...ooh yeah, just there" which earned me a slap across the head. In this day and age he would probably earn himself a spell behind bars.

In a nutshell, school was a long nightmare and one that I would never willingly repeat.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive

You cannot know & every bag you get would need weighing separately, that is because of moisture content & the differing densities of the component materials that make up the final product, Do try to keep up VC

Because of the variable weight at final point of sale perhaps

The other thing about America is their Billion, isn't anywhere near as much as our Billion.

                    When's the next shuttle?
Just one more thought, it all depends on where it was packed, as on earth gravity varies on where you are on the planet by as much as 2.5%, so 56 litres packed in one place, might be 54.6 somewhere else.

                      Excellent point well made bud

I do have a notion that bagging by volume only may be an elfin safety related work-around as there are guidelines for lifting weight but not for volume
