Ah that all depends on how wet it is, a litre of water is 1 kg dependant on its temperature. So 56 litres of soaking wet compost is too heavy to lift. Always buy your compost on a dry day.

So why do they stack bags of compost outside in the rain, and why do the bags nearly always have holes in them, and why, when you manage to lift them high enough to go in the boot of the car, does the bag split and water pour out everywhere. This is not a rant, just a question or 3!

Cos compost doesn't go off, so they don't need to keep it in the freezer.

When lifting make sure you clear the catch on the boot, and the bag has holes in it to give the worms some air to breathe.

70 litres = 2366.98ounces
= 10.5 stone
= 67.10kilograms

Thats if it dry!

Therefore 1litre of compost = 2366.98 ÷ 70 = 33.814 ounces = 0.95kilos

So 56 litres of compost = 56 x 33.814 = 1893.584 ounces = 53.6822 kilos

or 118.3489 lbs in old money

I can understand a litre as a liquid measure - about 4.5 litres to the gallon.
And I can understand a kilo as a measure of weight - 2.2 lbs.
But why do they sell compost by the litre when it could be by the kilo.
I don't need to know how much liquid it would take to fill the compost bag, that's irrelevant. I want to know how much compost is in there and how heavy it is to carry up 50 steps,

One litre of water equals one kilo in weight. I can't see why the Europeans have to complicate things, when they started out making them so simple. If kilos and litres are the same, why not stick to just one name?

to convert from kilos (or litres) to pounds, multiply by 2.2. Don't ask me to do it the other way, 'cos I haven't a clue, I'm a mint imperial!

OMG I've just looked up kilogram on Wiki and the way the french decided what a kilogram was is the biggest faff and not simple at all, but it does explain why litres and kilos are the same.

Bring back feet and hands and ells and troy ounces, I say!
