  • Survived a camping trip!

Kissykit wanted to take her fiance camping, so on Sunday we bravely set out, amongst the torrential rainshowers that came down in the morning. Surprisingly, as we were only going 35 miles from home, the campsite hadn't experienced any rain, so getting the tent up was quite easy, and we got settled in OK. Monday was cloudy and cool, but no rain, so far, so good.
Tuesday they bought buckets and spades and wanted to go to Broadstairs to make a sand castle! Lovely sun, still cool, but optimistic. We got there, found free parking and decided to walk into town for a pub lunch. Only a few minutes after leaving the car the heavens opened. It was so hard I couldn't see through my glasses (walked into a bench), and I could feel the cold water running down my body inside of my clothes. We got back to the car, Kissykit wriggled out of skin tight, soaking wet jeans and wrapped herself in a towel, me and him had to just tough it out. We drove back to the tent, and I found out he'd only bought one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts and one pair of trainers( camping?).
We did the best we could, and had a pub lunch in a local pub (very posh, no chips, expensive). Kissykit and me looked the bees knees in our ankle length wellies. The sun then came out, so we went back towards Broadstairs, stopping to buy jeans and shoes, and they built their sandcastles. I sat taking pictures of them mucking about, paddling, squealing and generally enjoying being childish (are they really old enough to be engaged?), while I froze.
Wednesday, pelted down all day, we had to plan loo breaks to conincide with rain breaks, the puzzle books came in handy. In the evening it just didn't stop, so Kissykit asked if I could drive down to the loos. Best idea she'd had all holiday. To get out of the 'woods' where we'd camped we had to go up a very steep slope. The car decided to go into a skid, which was a bit scary as there were trees to avoid. Deciding we had been lucky to get the car out, we left it in the cobbled car park overnight (which was already partly underwater). The tent, the same trusty one that saw us through Grapestock, Yorkshire a couple of years ago, didn't leak, but the thunder, lightening and torrential rain meant a pretty disturbed night.
This morning it was sunny, but felt more like an April morning than July. We managed to get the tent down and packed up everything before the rain set in again, parking at the top of the slope. I wasn't risking getting stuck just for the convenience of saving a few steps. The tent is still drying out in the garage, hopefully we will get a few dry days so we can pack it away properly soon.
It hasn't put them off camping, but I have to say I'm pleased to be back inside a house. I think I might be getting a bit old for sleeping under canvas, negotiating my way through woods to the loo and shower, and doing without a dishwasher (though they did most of the washing up). Well until next time . Son no2 couldn't come due to work, but wants to try out this new place if he can get a few days off at the end of Aug.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I love camping, esp. with little kids (it's so wild, so adventurous!), but every single time we've been in the last 5 years, we've had torrential rain. We can brave it out once, twice or six times, but 12 ? Beyond a joke.

So, no more camping until the weather decides to play ball.

we went camping a couple of weeks ago in our new (2nd hand) trailer tent ... was a great weekend ... except it chucked it down ....

we knew the tent had a couple of holes when we got it ... and yep, there was a bit of leakage ... but we survived ... we had taken kit to repair the holes, but no chance in the rain ... and i made another hole too ...

the trouble with trailer tents is they're soooooo big .... and it's proper old canvas ... it all came back wet and we had canvas all over the house to dry out for several days ....

we'll be off again next month .... hopefully a nice dry weekend ....

I love the thought of camping............just not the actual camping.

Ha! sounds like the last time we went camping! St Davids back in the 90's...ended up having to tie the tent to the car so it didn't blow away!!!( ....tent that is...not the car! )

I love the sound of the rain hitting canvas its kind of soothing to go to sleep to, but what I don't like is packing away a soggy trailer tent.

got to admit that we've now progressed to a caravan! We used to go camping but a couple of years ago my back decided that it wasn't going to have this crawling around on the floor lark anymore!!!!
We're going away this weekend - about 10 miles away, but hey away is away! lovely little site so looking forward to it, with heating, fridge, cooker etc,etc and no wet canvas to dry when we get home!
