Hello Sez, I think it is irresponsible of people to shoot guns in areas where there is any risk of harming nieghbours or their pets. But what kind of birds were they. Magpies ?
To be honest, when I see what they do, and the havoc they inflict on other birds in the garden, I would shoot them if I could do it with 100% safety to others.
If your neighbours are just shooting birds indiscriminately, they should be pursued with the full force of the law. And have their heads sorted !!!!
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

You can photo/catch him firing the gun accross your land (although you have the birds as evidence I suppose they may still have been shot in his garden) but even then I don't know that the Police would do much. You don't require a firearms cert. for most airguns and they are really most interested in illegal weapons. If he threatened you with it, or shot something protected ie; a hawk/buzzard/owl perhaps... but a songbird? Sadly I don't think they would care much. It would be good if you could confirm the type of bird Sez as this would really colour our opinion/advice.
Its all a matter of respect really. I don't agree you should lie to the police about your safety -as you have not actually even witnessed him firing this weapon. You have to remember that you must continue to live next to this guy and his gun (and you have my deepest sympathy- if as I suspect, he is a brainless t*sser). I am not a vegitarian -although married to one -and I grew up around shooting (although we do not have guns in this house.) I have little more sympathy for pigeons, or rabbits, than rats. and i'd eat them- (not rats!). Magpies are a hansome but nasty pest; we are plagued with them here- but I don't kill them. Yet, I have to agree with Alice, these things should be done safely, sensitively, certainly niether over your land nor leaving carcasses everywhere and especially so given your views on the subject.
I really hope that you may find a way to make him understand and continue to live in the peace you deserve.

How old is this numb nuts? If he's young enough, talk to Mum and Dad about him - if he's the householder, ask him nicely to stop and give him one more chance.
Next time round, call the Police - if you or yours get hit with one of these pellets/BB balls it will hurt like hell, I know, somebody deliberately shot me with one many years ago, luckily it hit me in the chest.
A few months ago a young person was charged with manslaughter in the UK after he shot somebody through the eye, the victim died a few days later.
This is serious and whilst I understand the reluctance to get involved in a dispute and agree that it's bloody awful for this guy to be shooting the birds (I used to shoot game birds and am now long-term reformed) there is also a potential danger to humans here.TonyF, Dordogne 24220

We seem to be going round in circles with this.....
Offence 1 ..Pellet has left shooters property...
Offence 2...Shooting birds..Under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981...
The police will confiscate the air gun/rifle....
Then check the air gun/rifle with a chronograph...
Air Weapons are restricted to a maximum power of 12 foot pounds force for a rifle and 6 foot pounds force for a pistol.
Above 12ftlb a rifle is classified as a Section 1 Firearm and requires a licence called a firearms certificate, and a pistol above 6ftlb is again a Section 1 Firearm requiring a firearms certificate in the UK.
You know what you have to do Sez....
