Calendula (pot marigold) is good for insect bites and it's easy to make your own cream too.
Midges hate the smell of basil, I grow extra and crush some leaves and scatter them around our patio and it keeps them away. If you don't mind the smell you can crush some leaves and rub it on your skin, my mum even puts a sprig in her hair.
As for that bite that left the large hard wound, I had one like that a few years ago, it was horrible but I never did find out what kind of insect was responsible.
