  • Yup, mum had a copper in the scullery - grated soap from a bar, and had the mangle out in the yard.
The washing dried on a big drying frame, up near the ceiling, over the kitchen fire - when it couldn't go outside on the line.

Everywhere was steamy on wash days

We had a four tub! A tin bath in front of the fire, youngest (my brother) in first, then me, Mum and my grubby Dad in last

          • And, by the time it was his turn, the side of the bath nearest the coal fire was almost redhot! Then they had to bail the water out with buckets so it was probably used for the dishes first

                          • It was good last night. Ruth with make up and a red gingham dress made from a flour sack. Wow. She danced quite well too.
