Advice needed about garden peas

How many peas should I plant around 1 12" cane..I want to create a wigwam effect using about 12 canes all together.

Peas can't climb up canes


You need to use pea-netting. The planting distance is on your seed packet: usually peas go about 2" apart

My tall peas (alderman) climbed up canes this year, although the later sowings did do better with some netting laid over the canes.
I planted much closer than the seed packet said as I get very erratic germination due to light sandy soil. my aim was about 4 round a pole with the poles about 6 inces apart in a tripod row.

I'm sorry i don't still get it so by making a wigwam with canes and planting about 2 peas per cane they won't climb up them you say . So are you saying that i have to put netting around the wigwam canes also is 2 pea,s per cane enough . I,m growing these in a large container my cane wigwam is set about 5 inches inside the pot and i plant the peas around the space between the canes and the outer edge of the pot so if peas don't climb canes without netting what about broad beans and runner beans do they need netting as well also do i use small hole netting or large hole netting .

small peas should be quite happy gripping onto themselves and the canes.

Tall growing peas would need some string tied around the canes every 6 inches or so, otherwise they just collapse under their own weight, I find

You say you have a large container David, but large is relative. Could you give size, preferably in inches cos I'm an oldie and have never really come to terms with metric.

Peas and beans climb differently. Peas produce tendrils which twist round on themselves and grip netting or string much better than smooth canes. Also I doubt whether 12" would be high enough for peas.

Runner and french beans climb by twining round supports, so canes are fine for these.

Broad beans don't climb at all.

Here are some peas that I grew earlier this year. I grew them just for pea shoots but let them grow on to see what happened. As you can see they make a tangled mess without support! The usual way of supporting peas is with twiggy brushwood, Although they have tendrils that will cling to netting, twigs, or each other, they do not spiral around bean sticks in the way that runner beans do. Your proposed wigwam would need a little more substance to it, like netting or twigs between the uprights to support your peas.

Hi david, to be honest i have never had much success when growing peas in pots or growing them up wigwams, I only grow my peas in 1ft wide rows, with netting either side of them (peas can grow upto and over 6ft in height), as a rule i plant around 16 pea plants per square foot (or 3" spacings per plant), so around 50 plants to a 4ft row

Nope, broad beans don't climb: they don't have tendrils (like peas), and they aren't vines (like runners & Frenchies)

They do, however, fall over in gales, so it's usual to corral them inside a cane & string affair like this

Broad beans don't climb but some are quite tall and may need support, especially in a windy situation. You can do this with sticks and string, or netting.
If I was growing them in a pot I'd choose dwarf broad beans.

Thank You all for your posts it has helped a lot but i now think i have it sorted i am going to grow the bush varieties sugar snap peas / Sugar Ann.

Its a pleasure, David. I like to grow Mangetout or Sugarsnap peas - so much less waste
