Having recently moved our allotments website on to the Wordpress platform, I was delighted with the way it was working and how folks were able to comment and also how I was able to respond to these comments. That is until the spammers discovered the site. I then found I was being bombarded with emails asking me to moderate spam comments that had been made and I also had to manually mark the comments as spam so that they could be deleted. I asked Aventure who host our site to advise what I could do to prevent the spam comments and they suggested installing an add on to Wordpress called Akismet.
Absolutely brilliant. In the week since I installed it, it has identified over 100 comments as spam and automatically placed them in the spam folder. Not a single comment erroneously identified as spam. No emails notifying me spam comments received and asking me to moderate these comments. Sheer bliss, just as it should be.
Why don't they i.e the Government, create a facility for people to elect not to receive emails? If it can be done for telephone calls and junk snail mail it should be possible.
