What Colour is Your Livingroom?

I'm asking because the BH wants to paint our stuccoed walls green but, although it is supposed to be the most restful colour for the eyes, I don't want cold green in what is already a dark room. Despite having French windows at one end, and a huge picture window at the other, this room gets hardly any natural light.

Currently we have Laura Ashley Stella on one wall (the only smooth wall) and the rest of the room is magnolia apart from the fire place which is deep red and covered with small gothic oak mirrors (it looks better than it sounds, honestly)

What colours has everyone got in their livingroom, or whichever room they spend most time relaxing in?

Our kitchen and living room are bright yellow, my craft room is green then in the evening we use the TV/ dinning room and that's painted terracotta but its a big room so it can take the colour.

I was discussing this with an interior designer t'other day. We both agreed that light colours in a dark room just don't work: they always look grey.

Our dark front room is done in autumnal shades: I couldn't make it lighter, so I made it cosier. Himself even liked the Chinese takeaway wallpaper* once it was up

I don't DO wallpaper - Patterns are not for me, so all the walls are plain colours. Here, its much like your colour scheme, Jules - cream walls with a dark red wall/chimney breast that is central to the upstairs - so the dark red wraps round into the kitchen on the other side of the chimney breast that also carries the staircase. Basically this house has just 2 colours as the red continues down the stairs into the hall below. It was very hard choosing the right red though!

I won't again, it is a faff: but I needed something to quickly cover up all the lumps & holes in the walls where the previous owner had banged telephone cable in (all over the darn place)

We only have one relaxing room - and it's light wood panelled. I keep threatening to paint it up to daddo wall height, but can never decide on a colour. Altho we have two sets of windows it's still easy to make the room darker.
No help sorry.

We've got Ivory. No it's not magnolia! It's either or Crown or Dulux colour. We've had three colours since we moved here getting lighter each time. We have lots of pictures and it seems to set them off well.

No wallpaper for me either....mine is a heather colour = its a north west facing room so quite 'cold' and this 'warms' it up a bit

My bedroom used to be pale green - Hint of Apple or summat, with dark green picture rail and skirting. Loved the pale green actually -not at all dark.

Our living space is open plan and all painted white.

To relax I can go to my study which is ....white. The bedrooms are white. Mr PP's study is still bare plasterboard but will eventually be


white. To match the bathrooms.

We worried that it would be too white, but almost every wall is covered in pictures, mirrors and mostly bookcases so you don't see it.

We talked about accent walls, but I know it won't happen as after three years of working on the house we've had enough!! I would love to have just one wall in a really strong wall paper...

Bladdy Magnolia all over.................... I would love to paint the ceilings white & enhance the ceiling beams but the landlord won't have any of it......I'm sure he buys Magnolia in bulk.

We have a dining room with just a small window and some internal glass doors, so not very light, Its painted warm ivory with a thinly brushed top coat of a light metallic gold so that it shimmers and catches the light - beautiful by candlelight

My favourite room is one which we've just renovated.
The walls are uneven and softly undulate and are 'plastered' with a fine marble powder which is coloured with a soft burnt orange/cream pigment.

Warm and cosy looking, yet fresh.


Jules- if you felt the green is too cold, warm it up with accent colours in the form of cushions, little vases etc

I found my favourite shades in a birthday card- so I used to carry it around in my bag, so when I spotted something I quite liked in a charity shop I'd whip it out and see if the tones/colours gelled.

May be worth buying a sample pot and paint a bit of white paper with it. Then carry that around with you.

You may think me a bit barmey, but my friend's favourite colour was that of a toothbrush she'd bought- so she always carried that around with her!

I think all landlords do Mally. Mine is rented and the entire house except the bathroom and kitchen is MAGNOLIA.

When we were about to sell our UK home we decided to repaint the rendering.
We'd had it painted 10 years earlier and it was starting to look grubby.
So- we asked the decorators to do a patchwork of slightly different shades and we'd choose one.
Originally we'd chosen magnolia and fancied a more fresh looking colour.

Long story short ...etc etc...

When we pointed to the one we liked - way above the others -he laughed and told us it was.......


yup......


MAGNOLIA !
( exactly the same as we'd had before!)
