some off the comments above had fallen on deaf seed ears, so as is their natural wont, the seeds snuggled into the soil and dreamt of the better weather to come

There were no corn seeds so they had no ears and couldn't hear anyway. But the seed potatoes did have eyes, with which to see such evil acts being carried out.
