  • Hedge Laying Course...

Anyone ever been on one of these and more importantly, any chaps? Did you enjoy it? Mr VVG always hovers around the hurdling stands, but hedge laying is being offered at a country park for £50 (?) over a weekend soon. Are these any good and will it hold enough interest for a secret hurdler like my grown up cub scout?

My father taught me how to hedge lay a few years ago, personally I fancy doing a course on dry stone walling. There really isn't anything special about hedge laying, its a simple process which gets easier with practise. £50 is alright, but its something you could learn the basis of in about an hour.

This is only my personal opinion, before some professional hedge layers come along and shout me down.

I also fancy doing a butchery course.

I saw in one of the River Cottage episodes, HFW being shown how to do it and it didn't look overly complicated. If you have a hedge that needs attention, seems to me it would be a good way of learning on someone else's hedge before destroying yours.

Hedge laying like all other skills has levels of competence,so it depends what your hubby wants to do after the training,a mate looked into it a few years back & concluded that the best for him was a four day course, but that was considerably dearer than £50.
If he wants to make hurdles (as in fence sections) then his best bet would be a course in wickerwork,as it is the same principle just more heavy duty.

It's a two dayer - five hours each day, so ten hours in total...plus I could go shopping then get the hedge done at home - no cost. It's a mix of everything, hawthorn, holly and elder.
