  • What can I plant in memory of...

My horse Gemini went for the long sleep today - he lay down in the field and didn't wake up - what a way to go!! Another 6 weeks and he would have been 31 which is a pretty good age.

I would like to plant something in memory of him and would love to hear suggestions for something easy to grow (and easy to move if we move home). Plants with Gemini or Gem in the name (little Gem lettuce is the only thing I have come up with so far )

Thanks folks - I know you will come up with great suggestions.
    Happy Gardening,
    Shirley

Shirley, Im so sorry to hear about your loss. I can sympathise, remembering the loss of my cats in the past. You must be feeling gutted. I'm sorry I can't think of something you can plant - perhaps a tree, that will grow and grow and everytime you see it, it will remind you? Just remember, no matter what happens, you always have your memories of all the happy times and that is what is important. Love Bernie

        http://www.sheilachapman.com/

or you can go to www.rhs.org.uk and gp to 'plant finder', put Gem into the search box.

        Hope you find something.

Sorry to hear your news. I can't think of any plants with gem (and tried a google but it didn't work) so send you best wishes and a hug.

I 'm sure you cherish the time you spent together and smile at the memories. Warm thoughts to you all.

Thanks for that SarzWix. Hadn't thought of looking at Clematis though that would be a good one to start in a container in case we move. Just need to find a picture now!

Thanks guys. Many many happy memories since I had him from the moment he was born - my mum bought herself a little mare and she turned out to be carrying extra baggage We got quite a surprise when Gemini popped out (very inexperienced horse owners back then).

Hi Stg and so sorry to hear of your loss - must be especially hard as you had him from birth.
There is a daffodil called Gemini Girl and if you are thinking of moving, then these might be easier to uplift then a clematis, (depending on how big your clematis gets of course)

Thanks Rat, problem there though - he was the male of the Gemini twins

His name was a problem all the way through our competition days - everyone thought he must be a she!! His mum is buried under a large clump of wild welsh daffodils, so I might try the clematis for the old boy. I still have his 'little' sister (about 26) and his nephew (16) but it will be strange to not have Gemini.

Hi Shirl, very sorry to hear about Gemini. I had a quick search on ebay and well I think I prefer the pelargonium, but you might like the cucumber?

                      gemini cuke?

                      gemini geranium?

                      Not a great selection.

Plant wise all I can think of is Gem squash and Gemini tomatoes.

Just adding to this post. Why not have a rose named after him?
LOL it would have to be a tasty one! Horses love eating roses

Thanks SBP, when we were competing, Gemini's bandages, headcollar and 'travel trimmings' were always red! I know I can keep geraniums alive so may just go with that suggestion. Specially love the fact that the nursery is in donkey meadow!!! Madmax keeps telling me they are donkeys not horseys!

sorry about your horse. i see on one site, its the rose for Gemini-star sign. Gem squash maybe. maybe cross-polinate it with something else and call it Gemini. or a memory tree, ginkgo biloba. cant move that though.

                              Hi Shirley

So sorry to hear about your loss. I had to have my New Forest pony put to sleep a couple of weeks ago at the age of 29 after he suffered a stroke. It was an awful awful experience. I hope to take his ashes down to the New Forest later in the year to be scattered.

                              Regards
                              Mark
