Just mind you haven't been into the radish or brussels sprouts before you try, or you might be able to accompany yourself without any musical instruments!

Oh, oh, oh...radishes....we had sautéed caramelised radish on Christmas Day. Really a quite different flavour from raw radish. Will definitely make them again.

You just saute them in a small pan with the knob of butter, pinch of sugar and a pinch of salt, until they are pale pink and starting to look translucent. Serve them with the butter (it's now pink) and a good twist of freshly ground pepper.

A twist of black pepper!! Reminds me of those pretentious restaurants where they only own one pepper grinder and its about 3' long. Some poor waiter/ress has to go around every diner asking them whether they'd like pepper. I never dare say Yes as I know I'll laugh when they screw it. You really would think that with the prices they charge they could put a smaller one on every table.

          Oh

I didn't think I was pretentious. Although I sometimes get treated like the waitress and my dining table treated like a restaurant......

And I bet you didn't go round the table asking if anyone would like pepper on their radishes.......

I don't mean YOU're pretentious, Jules, although I haven't seen the size of your pepper mill I always grind pepper at the table, but for me only. I like to think that everyone else can decide just how much they want on their food Those pretentious restaurants seem to think you need a special driving licence to operate a pepper mill

Being a flash git I got two pepper mills (they're cheaper than sheds ) a middlesize wooden one with black peeper in for adding seasoning while cooking & a small clear one for the table with all pretty coloured peppers in.

Jules,I did not read your post as being pretentious, more descriptive I would say

In an attempt to redeem myself in Jules' eyes, I've done a pepper and salt mill audit. Two small ones in the dining room, and 4 in the kitchen - 1 pepper, one salt and 2 with different herb or seaweed salts - and a nutmeg grinder. The largest is about 6" tall

Our dining table salt & pepper (you'll notice I refrained from saying 'cruet' so as not to be pretentious ) are mills, but they're chess pieces. Pepper is a King and salt, the Queen. We bought them, unused, for a few pounds in a local charity shop years ago, but I think they were very expensive when bought new as the grinders are very, very, good. #1 Son has made me promise to leave them to him in my will.

Like the sound of those Jules - quirky I do have a cruet my Mum's, 4 pieces on a silver (EPNS?) stand - never likely to use that - don't think Mum did either!

I vaguely remember a restaurant I went to with the ex (not that he was then) before the boys were born. They had a pepper grinder that was disguised as a bottle of red wine? Funny the things you remember innit?
