  • Useless bloody B&Q! Drove over this morning for some form of soil improvement for tree planting at school only to find that they had no composted bark, no manure, no horticultural grit, no pea gravel, no silver sand... The staff member that I asked where it all was said 'Oh, the season hasn't really started yet, it'll all be in in spring'. Had to make do with play-pit sand and peat-free growbags

    • One from son no2. Bar staff when you ask for one diet coke with ice and one regular coke without, who reply so that's one full fat coke without ice. Coke doesn't contain fat. Sugar yes, fat no! (Amazing, he managed to let it go, he's usually so pedantic).
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

      • Thinking it'll be quicker and easier to order my seeds online, taking 40 mins to enter the order, £31 worth, the site crashes, and crashes, then its back, ah good check-out, ah crash! It's back, crash, back, crash... one click short of an email telling them to stick it up their ar5e...and its done.
        It'd better turn up fast.

Complain anyway - you might get a discount. All those crashes could well have caused your card to do something nasty.

          Rant: too many pancakes. Oooff....

I went there to get a load of decorating stuff yesterday, they hadn't got half of that in store either so spent ages wandering round trying to find stuff. Eventually got to the tills and discovered that there were no proper ones open, only those stupid self service ones that are obsessed with unidentified items in the bagging area. Can't stand the things at the best of time as they always take longer and I'd rather a real person had the job but for goodness sake, are they really appropriate when you're buying a load of wood and coving? Left my trolley in the isle and walked out, that's almost an hour I'll never get back.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

B&Q aren't really fully fledged garden centres, they just dabble in everything. They're good for plants, tools and containers but I get seeds and compost from pound shops.
My local one also discounts a lot of plants that are a bit past their best - I got 3 French lavenders (Papillon) in 2L pots for £6. They were previously £6 each or two for £10!
They've got a lot of English Lavender in and some new plants, these look like they're leftover from last year. They should be better than the ones they have in though being a bit older and larger. I'm putting them in a terracotta pot.

People expect everything from one store and then wonder why the high street is dying. Asda is the worst, people that shop there try to buy everything there. I don't expect to buy everything from one shop.

Are they that bad? The ones at Tesco are usually fine. (my local B&Q doesn't have self service)

              • Got some dry skin on my chin and cheeks and it stings and is bright red. I had to go work like that because cream hasn't helped it, had it since sunday and don't know how to get rid of it. Just read something on the internet saying olive oil, but that seems to be the cure for everything these days and I'm skeptical. Nevertheless, I shall venture with my deformed face to get it tomorrow.

I don't expect all shops to have everything, I do however expect a DIY shop to have DIY products in it and it comes to something when they don't have the basics in a superstore.

Yes, they're terrible. I don't know about T&sco as I boycott them but the only shop I've ever found where they work is IKEA. Since they've done up our little COOP they've added two of them and nobody uses them. Me and OH are taking bets on how long it is until they get rid, am hoping it's soon as I feel sympathy for the staff as they have to go across and sort things out if anybody does give them a go. Would also much rather support a real live employee who you can talk to rather than a machine which keeps repeating things in that really annoying voice they all have. Actually while I'm on the subject, there's a carpark paying machine near me that I usually end up shouting at, it's not that it's difficult to use (it isn't) but it's the way it keeps repeating that you can pay with cash, cards or prepaid something or other at you and if you take a second longer than it wants it asks you in a slightly aggressive computery voice if you want to continue the transaction. By this time I'm normally shouting at it that of course I do and if it were a real person it would be able to see that I'm getting my purse out...... arghhhhhhhhhhhh. Real people beat machines almost always.

People who rant about other people's rant on the rant thread, which I'm now ranting about because it's made me feel really quite ranty.

                    • Incidentally, my nearest proper garden centre that's open on a Tuesday is 10 miles away. B&Q is 4 miles, and has a large dedicated garden section outside and in. Which would you have gone to, with less than quarter of a tank of petrol to last you until next Thursday?

                        • Ski resort issues snow/lift report so off we set.

Ten minutes later they issue the report saying the roads are all closed for avalanche clearance.

We didn't get that report until after we'd driven to the hill, found the end of the queue, found out what was going on, turned round and driven home again.

10 miles? I have 3 all within 5 minutes driving and a 4th in about 10 minutes. For some strange reason they're all at the same side of town. I guess I'm lucky and you're not.
