  • VC - My week 44 challenge is:

'Write a review of the book 'Tom Morris of St Andrews - The Colossus of Golf' based on my findings from a Family History viewpoint for inclusion in the next FHS Journal and submit it to the Editor before the end of the week.'

I am delighted to say that the paper is now finished and has been emailed to the editor so week 44 challenge is now completed

However, I await the reaction of our golfing members, some in the USA, with some apprehension, as the limited edition of this book was voted 2009 Golf Book of the Year by the United States Golf Association and the authors were presented with the Herbert Warren Wind award by the American Golf Writers Association in 2009 for their contribution to the game.

If I have to go into hiding I will try and take my computer and take refuge on the allotment so that I can complete the remaining 8 challenges

    • Is it still 44? Made Welsh cakes for the first time, yesterday.
One summer when I was a student I worked as a tour guide at Dolaucothi Gold Mines and lived on what felt like a diet of Welsh cakes (mines tea shop - although it was a hut, then) and beer (night). Brings back happy memories

The Dolaucothi teashop is still a hut - maybe slightly larger than it was but a hut nonetheless

                • Its an interesting place to visit - quite near me in West Wales. You go into the Roman mines, through the tunnels, with miner's helmets on - or is that Big Pit (another interesting place to visit)

                      • Week 44 Challenge.
To record a soundbite from the Tim and Joe show in which I was mentioned (Thank you BM) onto my mobile phone (Thank you Bren for the idea).
For some, it would not even merit being called a Challenge but for this technologically challenged old bird it was a flight into the unknown. After a few false starts I did it..........and it took me even longer to find out where it had disappeared to in my phone
Hope I can remember how to do it, as I have another little mention to record after this morning programme

                          • Week 44 Challenge

                            Make Sweets

I don't think that I've ever made sweets before (except some rich chocolate truffle/fudge thingies as part of my International Cookery course, which turned out just a bit solid, and just a bit big - a whole one made you feel sick), but with the festive season (almost) upon us, I thought I'd better have a go to see if they will make good presents.

You can't have an easier recipe than peppermint creams, so I gave them a go.

Whisked egg white and icing sugar went in the bowl and was kneaded to the consistency of plasticine, then I split it and added green colouring and peppermint to half the mix;and red and yellow food colouring and orange essence to the other.

I punched out tiny rounds with a cutter, chilled them then melted chocolate to brush on top.

Verdict - peppermint, excellent if a bit overly green; orange, bit of a funny taste but ok.

Overall - yep, as 'homemades' go, these are better than the bath bombs (wk9), and on a par with the tree decorations (wk43). My week44 Challenge is done.
