52 Week Challenge - week by week through 2013

VC - I will be running a Powerpoint presentation of photographs, to accompany a talk about Troon in the 1940s to be given by one of my fellow FHS members to schoolchildren at the Library on Tues & Wed 5th & 6th Nov.

Just have to source three more photographs, test out the projector, and I will be ready to roll

Week 1 - Toasted my new Allotment on site on New Years Day
Week 2 - Limed 2 beds on my Allotment
Week 3 - Fitted a tap to my Allotment water butt
Week 4 - Taught my friend to research his Family History
Week 5 - Created a book from the Prestwick Burgh Records, covering the period from 1470 through till the late 1700s.
Week 6 - Bought seed potatoes for the first time ever - a total of 60 consisting of Rooster, King Edward and some Pink Fir Apple.
Week 7 - Started chitting potatoes.
Week 8 - Made a new allotment sign out of a bit of old tree trunk .
Week 9 - Built the first of a number of wire mesh cages to keep off the rabbits, squirrels and any other nuisances
Week 10 - Sowed Sweet Pea and Leek seeds indoors.
Week 11 – Tidied Garage to allow access to freezer.
Week 12 - Joined work party maintaining allotment site common ground
Week 13 - Made a Fire and burned all scrap and waste wooden material on allotment common ground.
Week 14 - Prepared bed for potatoes and planted same.
Week 15 - Cleared the 4 Family History cupboards in the library reading room to allow a new carpet to be fitted.
Week 16 – Won chess game which enabled us to win the match.
Week 17 – Helped on my daughter's plot and sowed peas, beetroot and carrots on my own.
Week 18 – Planted Onion sets, sowed some more pea seeds and netted cabbage plants.
Week 19 – Erected walk in greenhouse and helped layout daughter’s plot with paths, beds and sitting/storage area, also 4 Blackcurrant bushes planted.
Week 20 - Built a cage for brassicas.
Week 21- Erected protection pens for various vegetables planted on my daughter's plot.
Week 22 – Had a go at using the Allotment Site's Strimmer.
Week 23 – Covered brassica on all sides and across top with debris netting.
Week 24 – Finished off all my summer bedding and basket/tub planting.
Week 25 - Updated Family History Website.
Week 26 – Sorted through all my Hunter ancestry papers to enable me to respond to query from an Australian Historian.
Week 27 – Carried out Monthly Inspection of all Allotments - my first time carrying out this task
Week 28 – Lifted overwintering onions
Week 29 – Sampled blue potatoes from my Wolverhampton/Birmingham friend’s plot.
Week 30 – Week 30 challenge - replaced plastic cloche covers with debris netting.
Week 31 – 1st week’s Boating Holiday on the Norfolk Broads
Week 32 – 2nd week’s Boating Holiday on the Norfolk Broads
Week 33 – Entered veg in Allotment show for the first time - I got 2 x 2nds & 2x 3rds.
Week 34 – Catching up on work on allotments and garden
Week 35 - Printed replacement publication books and burned new CD's following very good sales at the Motherwell History Fair.
Week 36 - Got enough barrow loads of manure from free supply to cover the potato beds on my own and daughter's plots.
Week 37 - Completed the clearance of weeds and dug over 3 beds on my plot 18A.
Week 38 - Collected seaweed to cover the bare earth on the cleared beds on my plot to suppress the weed growth from now to next spring
Week 39 - Started copying volume 5 of Walter Clearie's transcriptions from the Ayrshire News.
Week 40 – Planted 100 red, 50 white onions, 20 shallots and garlic.
Week 41 – Attended meeting at St Nicholas Gulf club where I outlined the errors in the Tom Morris book to the Archivists, (plus a few other members).
Week 42 - Cleared the quarter plot I borrowed from another plot holder last year.
Week 43 - Monday: - went to allotment for winter tidy on Monday and went to Library for production of publications on Tuesday
Week 44 - 'Wrote a review of the book 'Tom Morris of St Andrews - The Colossus of Golf' based on my findings from a Family History viewpoint for inclusion in the next FHS Journal

This week I want to ensure that I make time to get out for at least one run... last few weeks have been a struggle to get out with work so busy and various other things happening..

kt - Like VC I just made up the challenges on a week by week basis always aware that if I got stuck I could settle for an 'every 6 month task' like cleaning the windows or washing the car

It's a bit of a mix for me, kt - I brainstormed a heap of things at the beginning of the year, and then added to the list as I thought of them, some just come on the spur of the moment.

Because some of my Challenges have been really fun, and some more 'worthy', I was really good at the beginning of the year at choosing from my list (of about 70, I guess) using random.org, but as the weeks dwindle, and I know that there are some I definitely want to get it, I'm allocating Challenges to weeks a bit more closely. I'm not totally mapped out for the rest of the year, but close to it.

Some have been date dependent (like my wk25 'celebrate the summer solstice'); or event specific (wk32 'enter an allotment show'), and then - like Shen - I have some to fall back on, if all else fails (wk38 'clean the oven')

I'm not sure what to do with my left-over challenges (which will include 'learn how to dowse', 'ride a horse', 'finish knitting a long neglected jumper', 'go on a steam train', 'clear out the garage', 'go litter picking', 'learn how to crochet' - amongst others) - I don't have enough to do another year - although taking inspiration from the others (read: copying), I might be close to it....

My challenge for this week was to run a Powerpoint presentation of photographs, to accompany a talk about Troon in the 1940s to schoolchildren at the Library on Tues & Wed 5th & 6th Nov.

The second one has just finished - it took 20 mins more than yesterday's thanks to 3 or 4 very inquisitive young lads who asked a multitude of questions.

Do Some Knitting

The execution of this Challenge is - I confess - a slight cop out. The original Challenge read 'Finish knitting that beautiful sage green cable jumper that you've had hanging round for years just because you've got to the tricky armhole bit, you lazy mare'. But obviously, that was far too much of a mouthful, and so I went for knitting a little scarf instead.

I recently bought a lovely new (to me), green corduroy coat, and it really needs a matching scarf.

I bought some wool, and got knitting, and here's the result.



So that's my (modified) wk 45 Challenge done!

My week 45 Challenge has been all about Beds
Take delivery of a new bed, which meant moving the old bed into the study, which meant moving out a lot of files and unfiled papers and goodness knows what to make space. Some of it I've chucked, some has been filed, and the rest, that I'm dithering about is in the pending box
Then I moved on to removing the broken off pegs that hold the slats in place on another bed - and begged advice on how to do it on here Although I haven't removed them all yet, I've worked out a method that doesn't involve anything electrical!! Drill into the centre of the peg with an ancient hand drill, insert Phillips screwdrived into hole and twiddle it about a bit, attempting to lift the peg and squash it a bit. Next take a flat blade screwdriver and try to lever the peg out in less than 3 pieces. I am butchering the holes a bit but at least the replacement pegs should come out more easily next time the bed has to be moved
Every peg that I pull out makes me happy, have you heard me shout YEEEEEESSSS !!!

VC - I am going to have to split this week's challenge into two - I would never manage it in one week; not sure I can even manage it in two or even three but I have been meaning to do this for a long time so will make a start this week.

I propose to tidy up part of my boxed collection of family and local history documents and photographs along with all the rubbish mixed up with them currently occupying 12 smallish A4 size plastic and metal boxes and 14 large plastic boxes and some floor space.

This does not include local history books which along with all my other books, currently occupy 4 bookcases and tops thereof, 2 bedside cabinets and some floor space.

I may be some time
