      • Week 20 Challenge

        Just a cotton pickin' minute!

        Make Alterations to a Garment

Most clothes that I buy, I tend to wear as they come from the shop (with the exception of maybe turning up trouser legs) - I assume that I am the size and shape that Marks and Spencer decrees that I am.

Of course our bodies are all slightly different, and I am not the same uniform size and shape as everyone else who buys the same size dress in M&S - which means that I go round in clothes which more or less fit and suit, most of the time.

This is a shame as all it would take for the standard size garment to fit and 'hang' better is likely to be an easily do-able tweak - maybe a dart, maybe move a button, maybe shorten a skirt an inch - well within my capability.

Armed with this knowledge, I have this week attempted to make an alteration to a knitted dress. The dress is fantastic in all respects with the exception of the neck. I put the dress on, and I magically grow an additional number of chins. The turtle neck transforms me into Velma from Scooby Doo - not a great look.

So after a certain amount of wrangling with a pair of scissors and darning needle, I have turned the turtle neck into a crew neck - a huge improvement.

So that's my week 20 Challenge - done!

        • Looks much better Hazel!! I've never even thought about there being a standard neck length/height/width before I usually end up rolling the neck over 3 times instead of 2 so I must have been at the back of the queue when standard necks were being dished out Matches all the other reject bits though

That's a plant I've not heard of before. Have you tasted it? Why isn't it more popular? I've looked it up and it needs full sun....shame...don't think I have anywhere suitable.

Wait - is this yarrow we're talking about? The same as the yellow flowered flat-flower-headed plant? I've got an ornamental one I bought this year for my last sunny space, don't know what colour, the label said 'mixed' - I split it into 6 plants to see if it would grow in shade too. Are they all edible, or just the one you've got?

            • Here you are MH - Its Achillea Ageratum , not Millefolium . I've just had a nibble and its vaguely like nutmeg. Don't think it will be a herb to use in cooking though - its a bit strong.

thanks for the link VC. They look more like feverfew or chamomile flowers, don't they? Quite pretty. But I need to move the anise hyssop to where it has more room, so mace will have to wait (till something dies )

                • At the moment its a tiny little thing and likely to live in a pot for a while, or I'll lose track of it in the garden. Wonder whether it seeds easily If it does I'll send you some!

                        • This weeks challenge is to get my brassicas transplanted in to the ground..

Last week's challenge of sorting my chillies was completed... Tho I hadn't the heart to cull any of them...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

                          • Well, didn't even start the painting I was supposed to do for last weeks challenge. My daughter and I are doing the Flora ladies 10k marathon on June 3, so we have been walking every evening after she finishes work. Too tired to even think about painting until this is done.
My challenge for the coming week, walk some more and walk faster.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

                              and cardamom apple chutney

                              today I've made...
                              clementine and pear chutney
and 2 almond and black cherry cakes

It's great to look at all the finished products...37 jars and 2 cakes...yum!
